The concept of the Average White Band at first seems fairly preposterous. A group of white Scottish musicians attempt and succeed in being the one of funkiest bands around not only in the UK but, perhaps even more startlingly, in the US. The AWB are a six piece group unusual in having twin guitars and twin saxophones. The combination is perfect for producing the funky soul groove that would become their trademark.
The band formed in 1971 and although their debut showed promise but the key moment in the band’s career came when the legendary Jerry Wexler signed them with Atlantic Records in 1974. Home of many of soul’s greatest musicians, songwriters, performers and producers it was the perfect environment for the band to hone the sound they wanted and inspired them to produce some classic soul music.
Drummer Robbie McIntosh died in September 1974 following a drug related accident and the loss of Robbie, recognized as one of the greatest ‘groove layers’, was a hammer blow. Ironically, almost immediately after this tragedy the aptly titled Pick Up the Pieces took off after significant airtime on black radio
