Here i'm ranking my favorite artists of all-time by an artist-album-points method, current through new albums released in the year *2020*. I'm ranking artists by giving points to each artist based on where their albums rank within my top 4300 albums (updated 07/02/2021). The #1 album ("mellon collie...") is worth 4300 points and the #4300 album is worth 1 point.
I just felt like having another perspective on my favorite artists of all-time. The official list of my all-time fav artists is called "my all-time fav artists" (with companion list of #101-200) and factors in total impact of that artist IMO (regardless of album catalog breadth).
Obviously, a lengthy album catalog will garner a higher ranking on this list than an artist with a handful of strong material. Also, there are some artists of which i grouped albums of other monikers; for example, prince & the npg and prince & the revolution both count as prince, ryan adams along with his cardinals count as ryan adams, etc. (I generally did that when that 1 artist was the dominant, creative force or focal point of the artist's popularity.)
This does not count "current year" albums. Once a year is complete, i will add ranking points for those artists' albums to this list.
For each artist, i will be including my fav album of theirs. In the comment section, i will give their point total.

I was quite surprised how CLOSE Bowie came to surpassing Genesis on my initial run of this chart. But at a top 2300, he eclipsed Genesis. Now (02/01/2018) I have a top 2500.
RIP David Bowie [First added to this chart: 04/26/2017]
* Counting albums by Prince, Prince & The Revolution, Prince & the new power generation, Prince & 3rd eye girl
RIP Prince [First added to this chart: 04/26/2017]
By almost any measure, genesis is my favorite artist of all-time. But on this chart, Bowie edges 'em out. [First added to this chart: 09/22/2023]
* Counts both Ryan Adams + Ryan Adams & the Cardinals
Guy has to be pretty prolific if he's in the top 10 of a countdown like this given the names listed above. [First added to this chart: 04/26/2017]
* Counts Tom Petty + Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
I really didn't become a big Tom Petty fan until about 2009 when i started to closely examine the history of pop/rock music.
RIP Tom Petty [First added to this chart: 04/26/2017]
There was a time in college when i didn't like R.E.M. Go figure. [First added to this chart: 04/26/2017]
So it seems this list is heavily influenced by quantity. Yes, i have a bunch of the stones' albums and yes i generally like their music, but #21 of all-time? Please see my official list for a more accurate portrayal of my all-time favs. [First added to this chart: 04/26/2017]
One thing said about him over-and-over again that is so true -- he's had a great career that has outlasted nearly every artist that he's ever parodied. This is my favorite artist on this list that I've seen live twice. [First added to this chart: 09/22/2023]
* Counting Simon & Garfunkel & PAUL SIMON together [First added to this chart: 04/26/2017]

super interesting
I give you so much credit for figuring out a way to do this. I tried to do something similar, and was just too much work and too overwhelming. And it didn't come out anything like the way I figured it would. By ranking them from my charts, it turned out that Bowie, Carole King, and Krafterk were my favorite artists. But theyre not!!! It just appears that way. I don't know what I did wrong. So I just gave up.
