Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by TerryTezza

This is my Top 100 chart which is based on albums I have grown up with and have discovered later in life and been played many times. The albums I choose are based on it working well from start to finish and with a theme is a bonus. There is also that element of magic and journey I look for in an album too throughout. There are many artists that I would love to include but lack that album that captures me throughout and some albums that are not highly recognised that I feel are underrated

This is the album I listen to the most when I want to relax. An album of pure magic with an enthereal and mystical sound that takes you into an adventurous dream. A superb and very special work from start to finish. The album captures the early 80’s synth-rock sound in a classy fashion. From the opening track of Someone Somewhere in Summertime to Promised You A Miracle and the magical Big Sleep and even Hunter And The Hunted this album always captures me. Simple Minds have plenty of great albums like Once Upon A Time and Street Fighting Years but this album stands out as the best. [First added to this chart: 06/17/2019]

For me this album is U2 at their best (along with The Joshua Tree) being very creative in the sound and lyrics on an album on relationships in all forms and a paranoid look about society and views on life, like with Zoo Station and The Fly. In the 80’s I was a big Simple Minds fan and resented people calling them a try-hard U2 so wasn’t a huge U2 fan then. Come 1991 and listening to Achtung Baby on high rotation and I became obsessed with U2 and discovered all their music. All the songs are great especially Until The End Of The World, One and even the dark and haunting Love is Blindness. They made so many great B-Sides from this album they could have done a great double album which they did recently for the Anniversary version. An amazing music piece that is perfection. This album to me is the perfect album about life and also it was released on the year I was born. I listen to it every year. The topics, creative sounds, guitar solos, clashing drums and great comments like ‘I’ve always been mad.’ You have to explain why your mad even though your not mad.’, are priceless. The songs are timeless in its approach Like Breath, Time, Money and the politically driven Us and Them to the final classic lines of Eclipse. A pure joy to listen from start to finish. This album is The Beatles at their best with all shining through and especially George and Ringo. Come Together, Something, Here Comes The Sun , even Octopuses Garden and all of the last songs blending together end The Beatles collaboration on perfect note including Paul's little song of the Queen at the end. Amazing!!! [First added to this chart: 06/17/2019]

This is one of my favourite Aussie album that has been on high rotation over the years. From the opening guitar stroke on Waiting For The Sun to it’s twin song Thrilloilogy and Whatever Makes You Happy, the album is about classic rock ballads. Great to see it got voted Number 1 on the radio station Triple J Best Australian Albums Of All Time in 2011. With lyrics like ‘If you measure the world by the mark you make’ and ‘A fine line for the people in this lucky land’, the album is about social, political and emotional issues. Some songs are misunderstood like ‘My Happiness’ which is a sad song about drifting apart in distant relationships and ‘Like A Dog’ being a political protest song about the government ignorance on the Aboriginals request for an apology and more respect. This album captures great emotion on the struggles, alienation and paranoia in a world controlled by technology. A very prophetic album more about today than when it was released in 1997. The music is brilliant with various electronic buzzes mixed with great guitar rifts and heavy drums. This album has been on high rotation over the years for good reasons. Every track is engaging with raw emotion and some great lines like ‘Ambition makes you look pretty ugly’ and ‘the government...they don’t speak for us’. [First added to this chart: 06/17/2019]

An absolute legendary Aussie album that conquered the world. The album proved record company managers wrong when they wouldn’t release it as the album. Maybe because the album was ahead of its time with amazing new musical styles and clever simple rifts. INXS created gems from the opening track of Guns In The Sky to New Sensation to the poetic Mediate and the title track Kick, this album is as grand as ever. I listened to this album on high rotation at high school knowing all the words but sadly not the mathematical homework lol. [First added to this chart: 06/17/2019]

An amazing musical artist this is Peter Gabriel at is best covering all challenges in life and society and romance. To question things and also make an effort to be better. The songs Don’t Give Up and Mercy Street are very emotionally powerful along with more upbeat songs like Sledgehammer and Big Time. [First added to this chart: 06/17/2019]

A beautiful collection of songs that takes you on a journey of questioning your own life in self doubt and relationships and wanting answers. This has some of my favourite tracks of there’s and the most powerful. It is as a complete album and this album gets played the most of the Coldplay albums. Clocks and the title track A Rush Of Blood To The Head are my favs. [First added to this chart: 06/17/2019]

Starting the top 10 is true Aussie icon band at their best in Midnight Oil with 10 to 1. The album covers a whole range of political topics with some attitude and pleads for solutions in this complex world. From Destruction of Cambodia to business deals in parking lots, this has so many great lines to read about. I remember after an Oils concert everyone in the train sing their song U.S. Forces...magic. Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 10% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 87.8/100, a mean average of 88.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 88.7/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.3.

Finally, an Aussie brother in arms. Of course I love you putting Australian music where it rightly belongs - in a greatest 100 chart. Enjoyed seeing Simple Minds at #1 - nice move. My only reservation re your chart (& it is entirely a personal one) is that giving 50% of valuable chart space to only 12 artists somewhat limits the exploration & appreciation of 60+ years of modern music across the planet, including other exceptional Australian artists (eg The Church, Alex Lloyd, Living End, Black Sorrows...). That said, your loyalty to the artists you most admire is to be admired & respected.
