This album fu...""85 to 95/100 (Continuing a trend of punk albums absolutely kicking my ass in 2021, this album goes ahead and kicks ((perhaps)) the very hardest. Post punk, dance punk, noisey rock, artsy heaviness, oh my! Oh and go listen to "Snow Day" if you wanna see what is so great about Shame.) This album fucking rocks. It makes me wanna mosh and dance and stand still and sad whilst looking out at the city streets and go and tear shit up, all in relatively equal measure across its 42 minutes. Its nearly relentless in its heaviness, and it IS relentless in its tension and mood. All the while Shame remain undeniably accessible and even catchy. A few of these songs (namely, Snow Day, Harsh Degrees, Human For A Minute, Born In Luton) are next level statements and just sublime. The rest of the album and its other tracks are also excellent. The slowed down tracks are gorgeous, and manage to be manic and fragile and very tense all at once (The closer, Station Wagon and especially again Human For A Minute are excellent examples of this fine tight rope they so deftly walk.). On the great song 6/1, there is even a moment of emotional depth that rivals early Interpol (it does sound quite similar to some of those classic Turn On The Bright Lights songs). I don't have much to say of any usefulness. I guess I will summarize in the following run-on sentence: if you love Punk rock, if you love those manic and catchy Talking Heads guitar riffs from their late 70s albums, if you love the spit and fury of John Lydon's vocals and the cooler than cool (ice cold) vocals of peak Strummer, if you love muscular and, frankly, badass Bass lines holding down the furious beast alongside some pummeling Post-Punk drum barrages, if you love albums that come fully formed and beautifully paced and come with the singular purpose of shaking you by the shoulders and giving you a swift kick in the ass, then I think you will LOVE this album and it will become a new favorite or, at the least, you will appreciate the heck out of it. As I listen to this album more and more throughout the year (and I do think it will be one I am constantly reminded of and sticks with me) I am sure my opinion will blossom a bit. As of now I am mostly just loving that in 2021 I am listening to an album that makes me feel like a vibrant and pissed young rebel again. This album even makes Digital Marketing and IT troubleshooting seem like acts of tortured and righteous rebellion. "I need a new solution. There's some nice guitar work from Mick Taylor on time waits for no one and there's a nice funky ending with fingerprint file. It's a good album but it's nothing special and a lot of the songs feel overlong. It's a typical 70's stones album, but it's certainly not essential to the casual fan. "  [+]  Reply

It's make-up is just so strange. Roky Eriksson's eccentric, urgent vocal delivery is at times akin to that of a manic preacher, I've no idea what he's singing about but I do not at any point doubt his conviction especially on tracks like Slip Inside This House and Earthquake. The guy had an influence on Michael Stipe, an influence very apparent on "You're Gonna Miss Me" from the first Elevators record. The rudimentary equipment makes for some lo-fi recording which leaves some elements of the performance to the imagination, there are glimpses of brilliance in the harmonies and songwriting and your mind is left to fill in the gaps. Even with its harsh sound, Easter Everywhere is relatively easy on the ears. The album is bookended by two lengthier cuts, Slip Inside This House and Postures, which illustrate the growing interests in drugs, an interest tying in with 'jug player' Tommy Hall's advocation of LSD as a drug offering an elevated (like the band name heheh) state of human consciousness. Following the opening track are Slide Machine and She Lives(In a Time of Her Own) which are arguably the most similar to anything on Psychedelic Sounds of. Nobody to Love sounds like The Byrds if a crazed man with a musical jug was disrupting a recording but they weren't allowed to stop recording because they were on their last bit of tape so they just let jug guy do his thing. The rendition of It's All Over Now, Baby Blue is absolutely stunning. The guitars and steady drumming wouldn't sound out of place on a 'Heart Beating As One' era Yo la Tengo track. This show of restraint here and on 'Dust' is what was missing from the debut for me, there wasn't really enough dynamic or stylistic variation. The interplay between the drums and guitar on the verses of Earthquake is another highlight, in particular the overdriven, open chord guitar strum and drum fill combo just as the other instruments kick in, awww ye. The really brief guitar lick that appears twice in quick succession somewhere after the 1:30 mark is always satisfying and leaves me wanting more. 'Dust' is a testament to Roky's fantastic songwriting, comprised primarily of an acoustic rhythm guitar and concealing some real emotional weight. There's also a part where some precisely played bass guitar becomes more prominent for a moment, maybe a technical error that the levels fluctuate but I always thought that was cool. The verses to 'Levitation' are pretty ordinary but that chorus has the greatest hook on the album. Immensely catchy. I Had to Tell You is another acoustic one, with some nice folk harmonies and a melodica let loose in the background for the first half before it's moment in the bridge, on the stereo version it dances around between channels throughout the track. Postures is unlike any other song I've heard from this era. It's got a serious groove and some soulful, funky guitar. There's an almost motown vibe to a few of the tracks, made most explicit on this track. There's also some fantastic work from the rhythm section. I think some of the so called 'lost gems' of the psychedelic era are bullshit really, but I love this record. The jug is eternal, the jug is forever."  [+]  Reply

"This is TMBG at their smart and quirky best. Lincoln is more consistent than most of their albums though IMO "Don't Let's Start" is still their best song. If you want to try them out then this is the album. Their sound is not for everyone."  Reply

But, the lyrical content, itself, is promising and even strong at some points (I always like when artists relate feelings to colors). On the other hand, she also seems to be a bit too dramatic. I'm not much older than a teenager but the thought of her proclaiming that she's had her one shot at love and wasted it is silly. However, this is a strong project from a 19 year old, who is clearly very talented, and I'm excited to listen to her in the future."  [+]  Reply
