"don't let him steal your heart away" is a nice, sad ballad-with-bitterness, not overextended and bland as his 90s ballads became. He’s channeled it into a rallying cry. He’s taken his weakness and turned it into strength. Took fear and turned it into faith. In himself. In his abilities. Fading Frontier is nothing short of rallying cry for the sick & disabled. Anthems to get you fired up that you are important. That you matter. That no one is defined by anything or limited by anything. That one can surpass labels and diagnoses. And do something amazing. Pretty impressive for a pop album. And this is a pop album at its heart. And it works. Anthems were made to be heard on FM radio after all. And in a different universe, those first three songs would be staples on the radio. Not all the songs work. Snakeskin’s 70s T-Rex stomp has never quite won me over. But, the rest is near perfect indie pop. Grade: A. This is essential indie pop. These are songs for when the world wrongs you. For when you’re not understood. For when people don’t recognize the strength it takes to just keep on fighting and instead only sees weakness. Illness. This album picks you up, pats you on the back and inspires you to fight back. "  [+]  Reply

"I heard only recently "Casanova" in its whole, after having heard and read that the album is often considered the best from Divine Comedy. I was very excited about the recent Divine Comedy albums such as "Bang Goes the Knighthood," "Victory for the Comic Muse" and also "The Duckworth Lewis Projec...""I heard only recently "Casanova" in its whole, after having heard and read that the album is often considered the best from Divine Comedy. I was very excited about the recent Divine Comedy albums such as "Bang Goes the Knighthood," "Victory for the Comic Muse" and also "The Duckworth Lewis Project", so of course I had to get to know "Casanova", too. At first the album was a disappointment; generally much heavier arrangements, at times almost in musical approach. Moreover the number of really good songs doesn't compare with the later albums. The production also isn't not quite so clear and modern. Of course, there are really good songs to find. "Something For the Weekend" was deservedly a nice big hit - very catchy melody and spooky lyrics. "Songs of Love" is pure pleasure in its musical simplicity, after a streak of something heavy tracks. Both "Becoming More Like Alfie" and "The Frog Princess," were single hits, and these also belong among the most memorable numbers. The complex and dramatic "Through a Long and Sleepless Night" may be a little hard to get hold of, but it actually has a very nice chorus. I would, though, never choose "Casanova" to present the Divine Comedy to the uninitiated."  [+]  Reply

"Some of his stuff can be a little self-indulgent, but this album is completely on the money. Funny, irreverant and with some great tunes to boot, this is a classic Zappa album. I haven't gone through his whole catalogue, but this is my favourite so far."  Reply

This is no flop. Not even close. This is an incredible album I don't care whether its hip hop, alternative rock, or some imaginary genre that paladisiac decided to make up to try to describe music that is so fresh and so clean clean. I hate genres...also Big Boi didn't learn what he knows from Andre 3000! Big Boi has always known exactly what he was doing and it's no different now... anyway that is beside the point. Its like she envisions or, more accurately, hears music with more clarity than almost any human in pop music history. From the jump, with this solo debut of hers, its clear she is a legitimate A+ guitarist, a freakishly pristine and perfect pitch singer, and lyrically a poetic force of nature. Even on this, her first go at an album, she took all these insane talents and managed to put out a truly gorgeously shimmering debut album, which feels full and completely filled in despite it being by and large just her and a guitar. She manages to fill up the sound completely with complex chord structures and intensely beautiful, constantly shifting and soaring vocals. Intimate songs like "The Dawntreader" and the character study "Marcie" almost sound too angellic. And the guitar playing is, again, incredibly dexterous and sounds easy almost because she was such a virtuoso - case in point the ease of her singing over the top of the complex guitar of" Sistowbell Lane". There are also some parts that are just over the top with their speedy 2 or 3 part vocal parts like in "The Pirate of Penance" is unlike anything singer-songwriters of the time. The only knock I have against this record is that the vocal pyrotechnics do get a bit over the top. Just every once in awhile. Also its not like the whole flow of the album or the poetry here bites quite as hard as they do on "Blue". So, no, I'm not quite ready to say this is on the same level as that album. Still, its G-R-E-A-T. This album should be recognized as one of the best debut albums of the 60s. I don't feel like that is the general consensus, and that saddens me. Grade: 9.0/10"  [+]  Reply
