I had always been under the impression that Gordon Gano was the primary influence of weirdness brought forth by The Violent Femmes, but this initial solo offering by that group's bassist and fellow founding member, Brian Ritchie, proves otherwise. On The Blend, Ritchie experiments with multiple forms of weirdness from country blues to outright funk and shines resplendently. His singing would be the only weak point in an otherwise exemplary weird album. Songs like the cover version of Sun Ra's "Nuclear War", and Ritchie's own Two Fat Dogs show there is more going on lyrically than just a party disc. Released in 1987 on SST Records (Cat#: SST-CD-141) this is a fine foray into solo work and an enjoyable diversion from more mainstream works. Authenticated on discogs.com

A lot of hard work happens in the background to keep BEA running, and it's especially difficult to do this when we can't pay our hosting fees :(
