Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.3/100, a mean average of 72.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 72.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.4.

Not as good as their first two, but I always really enjoy PSB's themed albums. More collaborations on this album too, and all of them work I think. You + Me features Willgoose singing for the first time, and I quite like it. My favourite is People Will Always Need Coal.

Written as a tribute to the coal mining communities of South Wales, Public Service Broadcasting’s latest release does a splendid job of honouring its subject rather than simply pilfering from it for inspiration. The voices of miners and a local choir merge effortlessly with the band’s signature style, making this a respectful musical essay which prioritises feelings over politics.

An atmospheric capturing of the tragedy of the Welsh Valleys. It's the heart and soul of an industry whose loss in turn lost an entire society that has yet to recover. Not just a musical memorial then, but but an expression of what mining was to this stunning part of the world. Carries you with its gentle, finessed production and post-rock feel and delivers its heaviest blows in its heartfelt, despondent words.

London based duo PSB have released a fantastic concept album in relation to the rise and fall of the Welsh coal mining industry

Channelling Materials "Seven Souls" the album samples interviews , archival material and electronic loops to create an intoxicating mix that is both absorbing and powerful

Comfortably a top 10 album for 2017
