Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 15% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.2/100, a mean average of 73.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 74.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 11.8.

I feel this album is quite underrated, yes, it doesn't quite hold up with the first 3 albums in Belle & Sebastian's discography, but then again, what does?
With 4 different vocalists, it is always going to be a little patchy, and for me, the best tracks are easily the ones with Stuart Murdoch on vocals. These tracks alone make this album essential - I Fought In A War is great, the Chalet Lines is very moving, There's Too Much and Women's Realm are both excellent and the Model is one of their best ever tracks.
Still very much a Belle & Sebastian record but with more voices this time around as Stuart Murdoch heeds the spotlight a little bit, and ultimately we get an album with some decent songs, some weird and not particularly rewarding experiments and a lot of sketchy, amorphous folk numbers that make the whole thing feel rather aimless. Not terrible, but lacks the timeless, colorful charm of their previous records & singles.
A slightly disappointing Belle and Sebastian album. Fold your arms child, doesn't quite have that cohesion and zip that their previous albums(and some later ones)had. Some decent songs(especially the first two), there always will be with B&S, but this arguably their weakest record.
Not as bad as many suggest. A drop off for sure, but it's still got that Belle & Sebastian charm.
He was a charming lad who went to a private school and was always so well-mannered.
The last decent B&S album, Dear Catastrophe was OK in parts but they sounded a different band by then and for me lost a lot of their charm. I keep coming back to this one which gets stronger in the second half of the album.
