Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 64.1/100, a mean average of 60.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 60.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 17.5.

Hold Me Up marks the beginning of the Goo Goo Dolls' slow but steady change toward the more radio-friendly alternative rock. While the group's third album is still heavily punk-influenced, this album is mostly very straightforward pop-punk, with many fine, but not very memorable songs. At best, this album is perfectly high-tempo, with loud guitars and memorable choruses, like on You Know What I Mean or Never Take The Place of Your Man. At worst, it's more of the same punk music the band has put out on their first two records.

Wearing their Replacements imitation blatantly on their sleeves, I saw these guys open for the aforementioned Replacements on their "All Shook Down" tour. I was intrigued enough to buy this album and enjoyed it. The highlight of the album, though, was the roadie singing lead on the Prince cover "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man."

Early Goo Goo Dolls is pop punk. It's pretty bad pop punk though.
