(This is kind of a Microphones/NMH-ish album, with some good Indie Rock and Indie Folk songs. Solid lil album.)
I really like this. Its right in my wheel house. Works really well this bitter cold time of year. The music is mostly just a relatively direct and stripped down Indie Rock and Indie Folk Singer/Songwriter album.
The songs that kind of float along in an almost Microphones level of technical detail (meaning, low technical detail) are fine, but far from the stand outs. I may be a simple man, but the tracks I like the most here are the more rocking ones. These songs, namely "Bus Ride", "Shirt", "My Head Hz", and "Drop" have a nice shambolic edge to them.
The sweeter or more bitter-sweet indie folk tracks are consistently pretty and heartfelt, and the melodies are delivered with a certain slacker sentimentality that is never less than enjoyable. This is particularly true on such standouts as "Old Woods", "Mostly Lost" and the closing track "An Entire Year of Runescape".
Overall, this is just a nice album, with some cool slacker somewhat lo-fi aesthetic choices, nice sounding if weak vocals (weak insofar as they are brittle, not technically strong, but fit in the indie folk rock tradition quite nicely) and a good mix of mellow and rock songs.
