Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. No Doubt's debut is a huge ska band barely recognizable as the popular No Doubt band that released Tragic Kingdom
Heavy on ska and apparently popular locally in California it did little nationally.
Parting with many members after this, Stefani and the remaining crew begin what I consider their real career at Tragic Kingdom to follow.
This is an interesting listen in terms of No Doubt's origin but little else.
It had some OK songs, but there was ultimately too much use of horns for me to get through it all. And I'm not a big Gwen Stefani fan.
