Not your typical ECM album. It's not "third stream" Euro-jazz, it's funky American straight-ahead jazz (well, side 2 starts with a bit of an "out" excursion, but not that far out, and the entire album is very accessible) from a time when that sort of thing could be in short supply. Other than Holland and Steve Coleman, none of the band members are particularly famous, but they're all great players, and they seem totally comfortable with each other. There's no showiness at all; it's a band, and they're playing *together*, not just taking turns on solos. Holland and Marvin "Smitty" Smith are a cooking rhythm section, so much energy. Great album.
