Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 13% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.4/100, a mean average of 72.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 74.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.0.

I like the concept that The Mars Volta put across, their music is quite different to most modern prog/rock and there is interesting use of lyrics with lines like 'her dress slit me below the eyelids'. What I don't like about the album is the production. The synth intro on the first track is recorded so quiet that I have to crank the volume right up and when the acoustic guitar comes in with the vocal it nearly blows me out of the room. The drums throughout the whole album are recorded way too loud and spoil the mix. Based on the production on this album, I wouldn't buy anything else from this band.

It's hard to believe that this is the same band that produced The Bedlam in Goliath. Bedlam was painful to suffer through. This album is exquisite!

I can rave all day about how this is my favorite band, but i would be wasting my breath. If you are familiar w/ their work you know. This is a great addition to their discography. Considered their accoustic album it breaks those boundaries. Breaking the mars volta group down to it's bare essentials, octahedron is a depature from previous works. While still maintaning their signiture sound they forge ahead in new directions. A great album in my opinion. An amazing live show, you will not be disapointed w/ this band ever.
