Wgen he was young he try to be a rocker bur hé was the stunniest French voice. There is ma ny good French singers but when he was alive, everybody write for him because ge was the best French singer.
In fact, he really launched Hendrix career in France, inviting him to play in his 1966 concerts.
The musical quality of his career is very similar to the Rolling Stones. In the 60s it was magical, in the 70s it was great and since the 80s a little pathetic.
Fun fact : he was a bit mythomaniac. He claimed that he launched Jimi Hendrix's career and that the Beatles asked him to be his backing band. Many French think that's the truth.
Despite all that he seemed to be a very nice guy. I was really sad when he died.
Not the French Elvis, as often listen, but the greatest French showman with many ups and downs since 1959.
You can hate him (I don't) but you can't ignore him, he's a monument in France.
