HOLLAND is one of those distinctive sounding Beach Boys albums.
Holland first off has Sail on Sailor which I love... what great song. It incorporate some of the most blissful elating harmonies.
I really like Dennis' intriguing, unique, slowly chugging Steamboat.
The album's centerpiece is the trilogy "California Saga" - Light, country-pop of "Big Sur" / "The Beaks of Eagles" has the solemn recitation of Robinson Jeffers's poem which is broken up with wonderfully optimistic chorus/ The conclusion is the jaunty "California" that radiates warmth.
Carl's outstanding "The Trader" starts out more like a upbeat R&B song, but half way turns soft, shimmering and soulful.
"Leaving This Town" is a impassioned chilled out grooving number.
"Only With You" is a nice gentle, sensitive love song.
Light-hearted tune "Funky Pretty" is buoyant and fun.
Originally including as a bonus EP, the bizarre" Mt. Vernon and Fairway" is spoken word children's story with snippets of Brian playing the piano and singing. What can I say, it's an oddball... but the musical fragment are pretty cool. [First added to this chart: 03/13/2013]
