Top 84 Greatest Music Albums
by nshaw75

13.06.13 Reached level 4 So I can expand the chart to 100 albums So before it turns into a complete free for all I will try and sort the top 50 First.

I have now reached level 3 Which means I can have up to 50 Albums. I will have to start duplicating artists though now as I doubt I could have 50 let alone 100 different artists where I think there albums are worthy of a greatest album ever list.

Albums 40-50 will be a work in progress for the time being

I am going to put on here the albums which have been the soundtrack to my life. I won't put Pink Floyd or Radiohead on just because they are musically brilliant albums, because I have never actually liked listening to them.

Latest Update - I have removed duplicate artists I therefore hope to have a Top 40 of Albums from individual artists.

Started to populate the chart from 50 - 100. By no means complete or in the correct order as yet.

Pick: This is the one. The Stone Roses album is up there as one of my all time favourites and has been for the last 20 odd years. I remember first hearing the drums at the beginning of "Resurrection" and thinking wow. Must listen to this album or songs from it, almost every day. [First added to this chart: 04/26/2013]

Pick: A certain romance. When this album was released it was a complete breath of fresh air. In my view the music industry was pretty stale at the time. Brilliant music and the lyrics and how they are portrayed in the Yorkshire accent is summet else. [First added to this chart: 04/27/2013]

Pick: Supersonic. This takes me back to the summer of '94 before I met my wife and my old friend went to Glastonbury and did a road trip around the UK. We had Supersonic and Shakermaker on the tape player in the car. Another album I listen to on almost a daily basis. [First added to this chart: 04/26/2013]

Pick: Faster. This is probably the first album people will raise an eyebrow too. Very political and it is a very angry rock album. From hearing this album and seeing them live I could easily rank this as my favourite album of all time. This was Richey Edwards at his controversial best and to me, although I still like the Manics post Richey, this was definitely their swansong. [First added to this chart: 04/27/2013]

Pick: Too many sandwiches. An all time favourite album of mine, which cheers me up no end when I play it. Full of great sing-along anthems like "Local Boy" and "Too many sandwiches" My playing of this album has actually had an influence on my son who keeps begging me to take him to watch them. Pick: Wetsuit.I bought this album, along with a couple of other,on the minibus to the airport, on the way for our holiday in 2011. The other albums were left by the wayside as I really got into this album. I eventually played it over and over and over throughout my holiday and still listen to it regularly now. Pick: Stutter. This is an old favourite. If I knew how much the original would have been worth today I would have taken more care of it. I had this on vinyl and cassette and used to listen to it over and over.
One Man Clapping is a live recording of James a couple of years before they had their big breakthrough. Along with the Happy Mondays,Stone Roses, Inspiral Carpets and Charlatans these were the band I loved circa 1990. With my mop top and baggy jeans - LOL

Pick: The Unforgiven. Ever since I bought my first LP I was into rock music, as opposed to the fluffy pop, or psychedelic dance stuff. I had a friend from college who was into real heavy music and he introduced me to the likes of Metallica, Green Day, Iron Maiden, Rammstein, Megadeth etc We were even going to go to Castle Donnington in '94 but I couldn't afford after Glastonbury.
I remember the first time I heard this album I asked my mate to do me a tape. He did me a copy of it there and then and I listened to it on the bus home. Another great album I could listen to day in day out.

Pick: Had Enough. This album seems to bring out the football hooligan in me, not that there is one. It is such an energetic album and I can't help but sing along all the way through. Watching The Enemy live is a treat too as they put on a great show. [First added to this chart: 04/27/2013]

Pick: Our bovine public. The Cribs are from my home town of Wakefield. I heard their first couple of albums and wasn't overly impressed but when they released "Men's Needs" a friend of mine told me that this was much better and I took his advice and bought a copy. They raised the bar with great songs like "Bovine public" and "Realist" [First added to this chart: 04/27/2013]

Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 82.1/100, a mean average of 77.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 80.2/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 20.9.

I noticed you rated each of Taylor Swift's songs 5/100. I'm impressed, I haven't heard her entire discography and I consider myself a fan!! I'm glad you've been able to find good music like the Vaccines to listen to instead of her. Cheers!

Lots of similar albums/artists to my chart which means I rate it highly. Some I wasn't familiar with hence the non-perfect rating.

Chart is fantastic. I don't like a great deal of the selections, but the personal touches and its divergence from my own tastes makes it an interesting read.

Really nice chart & I love the comments against the albums. Nice to know something about albums I don't know & why people might love certain albums. Here's hoping that you get to 100 entries soon.

This chart may be a little heavy on the British, but it's also extremely personal which I love. And it's great to see One Hand Clapping so high. That version of Johnny Yen is simply incredible

Brilliant chart. 13/50 in common, but a lot of this is music such to the liking of mine. Lovely to see the Vaccines so high as well.

Tastes vary greatly from my own, but the thought you put into the selections, and the merit given to each makes this list a quality read.
