Obscured by Pink Floyd
by Mother Nature's Son

Pink Floyd, the band that took the concept of the album as an experience in itself to a new level. With a clear focus on the sound experience, Pink Floyd have arguably had a huge influence on ambient artists or at least inspired regular bands to incorporate a more atmospheric sound to their music. Pink Floyd are my friends whenever I feel there's no meaning with life, it feels like they have undergone the same doubtful thoughts about existence in general. A timeless band that has tried to reach out more than quite possibly any other band!

Ooh, babe! "The Wall" is such a wall of over-delivery, but without ever coming across as annoying, embarrassing or as an unintended joke. The music changes from fragile to thunderous and back again countless times with a steady build-up during the whole album until the wall is finally torn down by the end. Never before have emotions been expressed so boldly and never before has an album moved me so much, simply an epic concept album that never stops blowing your mind! Add to this some of the strongest nostalgic memories and you have a clear almost #1 favourite of all time.

Pink Floyd recycling the recipe from their classic 70s era once again. As usual, it's larger than life in a beautiful, melancholic way. Among all the great instrumentals of their career, "Marooned" here takes the cake for me. Even those who aren't too excited about the album gotta admit that "High Hopes" was a very proper farewell from one of the most important bands of all time.

I must confess that Pink Floyd's second most highly praised album was a big disappointment for such a long time. To me, it felt like an unsuccesful attempt to match or even surpass "The Dark Side of the Moon". It did neither, but today I understand it's perfection yet another time. I especially love the mystifying atmospheric transitions between the songs. "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is an impressive piece and an interesting idea to split up the song in two, but I still think the title track is a little overpraised.

We're all just animals! There's a really pessimistic, bitter tone to the album, but also loads of instrumental beauty with occasional singing. It can really suck you in and leave you drained for hope. Powerful stuff!

"Echoes" might be the best song in Pink Floyd's whole career and "Seamus" might be the worst. And they decided to put those two songs right next to each other! Hmm...

To those who say the album's all about "Echoes": "One of These Days" is a great atmospheric instrumental, "A Pillow of Winds" is one of the most soothing folk songs out there, "Fearless" has a great riff and "San Tropez" is a delightfully breezy jazzer.

Signs of life without Roger Waters. This is Pink Floyd learning to fly all over again with Roger Waters no longer controlling the band. The ambient textures and instrumental journeys are in front once again, all in all a welcome return to the older days of Pink Floyd with especially "The Dark Side of the Moon" coming to mind.

Maybe a little unfortunate to call it "The Final Cut" since it actually sounds like songs from "The Wall" that didn't make the final cut. The biggest difference compared to "The Wall" is the high number of slow ballads and sparser use of David Gilmour's solos. On the other hand, Roger Waters seems to have become even more the focal point of the band. It gets a little too drowsy here and there, but otherwise quality music as you know Pink Floyd (Roger Waters). Thanks for now, Roger!

Let there be more light with this saucerful of secrets. The psychedelic visions are still present here on Pink Floyd's second album, but as a result of Syd Barrett's disappearing role as main songwriter and frontman, the songs are much less silly and freaked out, ultimately replaced with a dreamier, darker and more cosmic flow. This is Pink Floyd starting to sound a lot more like... Pink Floyd!

Childish fairytale-like pop tunes put to crazy psychedelia and earth-shattering freak-outs. Pink Floyd were a band from another dimension even at the very beginning. I don't think the greatest member Pink Floyd ever had was Syd Barrett, but there's no doubt about just how much he was the main source of inspiration for the band, even many years after his disappearance. A fascinating interstellar overdrive of an album!
