If you can sit down for two hours to listen to a music album, then nothing else compares to this. It's not gonna grab you right away, and it takes time to fully appreciate it, but this is the best album-length musical composition I've ever listened to. It is, in a word, astonishing, a work of staggering genius.

'Sweet Thing' is probably the greatest song ever written. The rest of this album ain't bad, 'neither. Perfect for spring mornings when everything seems right in the world.

I read once that Springsteen spent days/months in the studio on the opening track alone, 'Thunder Road,' trying to get it just right. It clearly paid off. This is a brilliant album about disaffected American dreamers confronting the emptiness of American idealism ... it is, in short, the album of the American Left, and it is tremendous.

Dylan went electric an album before this one, the incredible 'Bringing it all back home.' But it's here that he's at the height of his poetic prowess ... 'Like a Rolling Stone' is the greatest 'fuck you' song of all time, 'Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues' is a lonesome paean to youthful erotic dalliances, the eponymous track is a wild mad homage to the Delta Blues that inspired the artist and 'Desolation Row' is an apocalyptic exploration of what, thankfully for those of us who have the luxury of looking back, only what might have been. It is the elevation of rock n roll to the sublime heights of poetry; it is an artist straining beyond his medium. It is, as much as any album could be, a work of art.
