My appreciation for African music only began within the past few years. Much like the music of other cultures, imported music from Africa has often been homogenized for an American audience, often by our own artists. Whether or not done with negative intent, it often provided a less pure look into the rich sounds of various cultures. And Africa is incredibly full of musical riches. From Fela's Afrobeat to the mande music of Mali to the wild contemporary sounds of Mbongwana Star, African music is not singular in style. This chart explores my favorite discoveries from throughout the African continent. Limiting to 1 album per artist, I attempt to highlight my pick for the album that best represents each artist. I hope this provides a gateway to discovery for many.
