People can be a bit sniffy about Enya, but on those languid afternoons when you just don't want to explain, she's just the ticket. No one can deny her musicianship, even if you do find the New Age dreaminess a bit soporific - I prefer the term 'meditative' - and her serene voice and plangent arrangements of incantatory lyrics give a spiritual feel to this unlikely pop hit, which even produced a No.1 single in 'Orinoco Flow'.

Usually rated her best album, though not my favourite, HOUNDS OF LOVE is nevertheless a very accomplished work. Released at the start of the CD age when vinyl was still mainstream, its two sides are very distinct: 'Hounds Of Love' comprises five stand-alone songs, most of which were hit singles, while 'The Ninth Wave' is a song-cycle about a drowning woman (some have suggested an attempted suicide) who is finally, thankfully saved. While I find the structure a little over-wrought, there's no denying the superb musicianship and variety of musical textures. I've never been a huge fan of the big hit single, though, and that's maybe what put me off a little at first: sorry Kate, but I find 'Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)' one of your more pretentious efforts. 'Cloudbusting', however, is fab.

Thank you buzzdainer for your most generous comments. It's not my favourite decade but there are still many hidden gems to be found there among the rough, hard-nosed Thatcher/Reagan years. You always make intelligent comments on music, so I hope to have the pleasure of your online company again sometime.

Outstanding chart! The Stone Roses, Nebraska, Graceland, and Purple Rain are all outstanding albums. I appreciate seeing the Indigo Girls' self-titled album in your top ten, as it's one that was in my regular rotation back when it came out. Overall a bunch of great selections. Pleased to see so many excellent female artists represented here.
