Yes, I KNOW what I said about compilations - but there was nowhere else to put this, and I've enjoyed it so much I couldn't leave it out. Not a greatest hits, not a NOW. . .type chart compilation, and containing examples of contemporary British folk/pastoral spanning four decades; yet oddly it works really well as a whole. I like playing it n dreary winter afternoons when I long for the spring to return. There's a nice range here, from the finger-pickin' good Davy Graham to prog folk from The Gryphon, from the George Harrison soundalike Duncan Browne to the sublimely original Sandy Denny with Fotheringay (Dave Swarbrick also does a version of one of her songs). And just when you thought it was all over. . .sneaky bonus track 'The Floral Dance'. Poptastic!

As with GARDEN OF DELIGHTS, I've made an exception to my general rule about no compilations with this - perhaps I should really have said "No Best Ofs". Most of these tracks were one-off recordings by the artists concerned, and therefore not available elsewhere, and I wanted my charts to reflect how much I enjoyed them. Of course, they are all 60s/70s originals, but the compilation came out in this decade, hence its placement here. A few tracks are slight, but the best are up there with the Jonis and the Judys of their day, and might have got a look-in but for the sexism of the record industry: one of these singers was told, "The world does not need another Joni Mitchell." Can you imagine them saying the world does not need another Neil Young? Or Crosby? Or Stills? Or Nash?
