For me, most of the decade, especially the first half, was a down period in music. As such, this list is highly eclectic, reaching across a wide variety of genres to fill things out. Just within the top 10 there is progressive rock, symphonic metal, alt metal, new age, modern jazz and hard bop jazz. In the end, it's one of my favorite top 10s largely because of the variety, even if the rest of the decade doesn't hold up as well.

Transatlantic are a neo-prog supergroup composed of Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Neal Morse (Spock's Beard), Ronnie Stolt (Flower Kings), and Pete Trewavas (Marillion). The overall sound is not metallic like DT, rather more like the progressive rock of the 70s, but still with an updated sound. They excel in extremely long, complex compositions.
