Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by Junomoogmello

I have quite a varied interest in music covering a number of styles from psychedelic, prog, heavy metal, hard rock, pop rock and eighties electronica through to some free form fusion jazz. I have a large music library with a mint vinyl collection which I am very proud of. I play a number of instruments and am fortunate to own a Juno 60, a Moog and Mellotron among various other toys including synths, samplers, guitars, pedals and electric drums. My user name is a combination of the three keyboards mentioned above. My fascination with synthesisers was triggered by two Tangerine Dream albums, Exit and White Eagle, these albums led me into a world of discovery and I own most of the huge Tangerine Dream catalogue in one format or another, I therefore make no apology that Tangerine Dream appear in my chart several times. I consider myself fortunate to have seen Tangerine Dream three times, the last occasion being at the Royal Albert Hall and from my seat I could have reached forward and touched Edgar Froese' Nord Lead! They opened with Birth of Liquid Plejades from Zeit if you are into TD. Music tends to sit within seasons for me, I tend to listen to more prog and metal through autumn and winter and more eighties new wave electronica/synth pop and psychedelia through the summer, I guess it's the feel good factor with the former (eighties) and the musical brilliance of some of the very original and mind expanding albums in the case of the latter (sixties), perhaps mentally transporting me to the Summer of Love.

The album is so ahead of its time it could have been recorded yesterday. I have several Beatles albums in my collection and I love them all for different reasons. With SPLHCB it is a very rounded whole, with revolutionary recording techniques, instrumentation and interesting songs which fit together well. Best Beatles album cover too! Recorded in the same year as The Beatles Sgt Pepper, this album still sounds years ahead of its time and is still fresh today. Up until recently I have only had the CD version however having just purchased the vinyl I have had no option but to push it up to no 2 position in my chart. I am now able to hear the full beauty of this album. 'Carnival Song' takes what the Beatles did with fairground effects on Sgt Pepper to another level! I love every track and could quite easily create a paragraph of text for each! If you have never listened to this you don't know what you are missing. [First added to this chart: 03/19/2018]

It was many years before I realised the true significance of this album. At times sad, at times uplifting, it is truly an amazing record of the love all of the band members held for Syd. I was fortunate to see Pink Floyd in the grounds of a Chateau in France many years ago and they opened with Sine on You Crazy Diamond. I shall never forget how mind blowing that concert was and whenever I listen to this album I am whisked right back to that balmy French summers evening to a listening experience which was truly unforgettable. I first came into this album when I studied music at School, believe it or not it was part of the syllabus! It was only later in life that I would truly appreciate how great this album was. If you read any of my reviews you will often see that I comment on the album sleeve as much as the music. I have a theory that 'from great album sleeves do great great albums grow', this sleeve is one of the best, if not the best of all time. [First added to this chart: 09/17/2017]

I had been searching for a near mint copy on vinyl for over two years and boy was it worth the wait. A truly amazing prog masterpiece! Because of the similarity with the Camel cigarette brand image I guess that this will never be re-issued. [First added to this chart: 10/23/2018]

Very possibly the best prog rock album cover ever! I am so happy that having owned this on CD for a couple of years I fortunately picked up the vinyl version during the recent HMV vinyl week. How times change, thirty years ago I was happy to replace vinyl with CD's!

Nine feet underground could possibly be the best prog track ever written too! Very subjective as I know there are plenty of contenders.

A pivotal prog album with a reputation akin to Dark Side of the Moon and Seargent Pepper. The musicianship on the album is complex and I hear different things with every listen. I particularly like the massive church organ and vocal on 'I Get Up, I Get Down'. The whole album is an amazing audio experience. It has stood the test of time well, still sounding fresh in 2018. This is a true prog masterpiece where all the instruments and vocals are captured at the right levels in the mix to deliver a sound which is akin to the band playing live for me in my dining room when I listen to this on vinyl. The Hipgnosis cover is very possibly my favourite cover of all time for its simple yet thought provoking design. Amazing! [First added to this chart: 07/28/2018]

This was the first Led Zeppelin album I ever bought. Although it isn't credited as their best in the charts because it is effectively a compilation, albeit a live one, the mixture of music on here is first class. The production is excellent and the versions of Staiway to Heaven and Moby Dick are awesome. You would think when you listen to Moby Dick, that John Bonham had a massive drum kit, in fact he didn't. The tone and dynamics he produces during the drum solo is truly amazing. I know that drum solos aren't for everyone but this one is worth a listen. [First added to this chart: 09/17/2017]

Not to be confused with the American band who stole the name, this was the original Nirvana formed by Patric Campbell Lyons and Alex Spyropoulos. Nirvana rarely played live, their song arrangements bordered on orchestral in parts however there were heavier parts. The use of cello on most tracks adds a quality which accentuates the beautiful musical textures and vocals. Surprisingly this compilation of amazing songs doesn't include the psychedelic single which made them famous, the very infectious Rainbow Chaser. That said, it is possibly a forgotten treasure that is most worthy of a listen, if it can be found. Black Flower, Pentecost Hotel, Illinois and Tres Tres Bien are all beautiful songs. Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 4% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 89.0/100, a mean average of 90.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 90.2/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.1.

What can I say?
Some interesting picks and tip-top commentary.
It made a fascinating read.
It's great to see Wish You Were Here and Sgt Pepper so high.
Wish I could have seen Pink Floyd live, must have been quite something.
I must try out The Enid and Budgie. Sound intriguing.
And thanks for introducing me to the track Patricia The Stripper.
I have a friend with loads of keyboards and sound equipment so I understand your passion.
I don't have the inclination to play instruments, I wish I could, but I appreciate great musicianship.
As you clearly do too.

Great chart. There's only a very small number of charts that have ever got 100 from me and they all contain extensive comments which makes them personal and therefore much more than just a list. Thanks for sharing. it was fun reading this. I also get the point about CD replacing vinyl and now vinyl replacing CD. If I find a nice vinyl copy of a CD that I already own I'll tend to by it.

Lovely chart.
Lot´s of albums that I love and a lot of unkknown albums.
I hope I`ll find the time to explore the albums I don`t know.
Good Tangerine Dream picks: Rybicon and Force Majeur are wonderful albums.
Zeit is a strange, mystical and difficult album: It´s surprising for me that it`s rated so high, but I like it.

A lot of very good choices, but I have never understood the appeal of Rush. You are right about needing Quark & Xenon, both great albums, as are many other Hawkwind Lp's.

Even though there's little intersect in terms of our shared tastes, this is undeniably a brilliant chart. Love all the effort that has gone into it in terms of the notes, as well as the flourish of both rock and electronic albums with a progressive flavour (TD's Zeit is a personal favourite of mine!).

For me, the focus on the 70s & 80s means that more modern forms of electronic music get sidewinded a little (would be nice to see some more modern ambient, as well as techno/IDM; check out my 2000s chart for my favourites in those genres) as well as hip hop, though otherwise this is a perfect chart in my view. Well done!!

Your taste in Tangerine Dream is divine. You have so many of them too. At one time I had four or five tangerine dream's in my top 100, but I thought it was too much, so now I just have two or three. Lol. Maybe I'll put them back in.
