Top 60 Greatest Music Albums

more like "favorite albums" than "greatest albums." If anyone is qualified to make a definitive list of the "greatest albums ever" it's certainly not me.

A bit of an odd pick for my top album, even taking into account that this list unreservedly represents my favorite albums rather than attempting to judge which albums are the greatest or most important in history. In terms of its position on this list, Broken Boy Soldiers benefits from several factors. First, I've been listening to this album for a relatively long time (since its release) and no song on it has ever gone stale. Each time I listen to it I love it a little bit more. A second factor is that I just love everything Jack White creates a little bit too much. And a third factor is that this album never gets much love from much of anyone, as far as I can tell. So is this really my favorite album ever? Probably. That's the main reason it is listed first. But on the right day, any given album in the top 16 of this list could be my favorite album ever. For the sake of my own sanity, I can't just go with my gut all the time, because if I did, this list would be changing not only daily, but hourly. [First added to this chart: 01/03/2012]

Ten perfect tracks strung together in the perfect order. More than any other album, I feel the need to listen to this one straight through from beginning to end without ever skipping a track. If I hear one song from Funeral in isolation I feel compelled to immediately listen to the whole thing. That's not to say that these songs don't stand up well on their own -- au contraire -- but Funeral takes the second spot on this list because of the way each track makes the preceding and ensuing track that much more potent when you listen to it as an ALBUM. Four sides of the most orgasmic guitar riffing in the history of music. Add John Bonham on drums and the most electrifying vocals in the history of rock, and... well well well... I can die eeasy. [First added to this chart: 01/05/2012]

I think I may have mentioned that I am a Jack White nut. That will soon become apparent, if it hasn't already. This was my first favorite White Stripes album. Each of the other five has taken its place as my favorite White Stripes album at one time or another as my appreciation for particular albums peaked at different times. But in the end, Elephant rose back to the top. The White Stripes never made anything resembling a mediocre or pedestrian -- let alone BAD -- album, and in my view The White Stripes occupy rarefied air alongside Led Zeppelin as a band whose catalog is both reasonably diverse and unbelievably consistent in quality. I could not in good faith leave any of The White Stripes' albums off this list, and so I have included them all. [First added to this chart: 01/03/2012]

I don't know how to explain what I love about Bob Dylan, so I'm not even going to try. Even folks who make a living writing about music generally don't seem able to say much about Dylan that means much of anything. Calling him "the voice of a generation" doesn't even begin to cover it. Suffice it to say that of all his hundreds of songs, my two favorite ended up on this album: Desolation Row and Ballad of a Thin Man. The title track is probably in my top ten Dylan songs as well. Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 86.7/100, a mean average of 87.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 87.5/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.5.

Oh yes, that number 1. Too much Radiohead becomes irrelevant when you have so many fantastic albums

Nice to see some love for the Raconteurs. Big Jack White fan all around...nothing wrong with that.
