"While I appreciate my bloody valentine for being one of the most daring and unique musicians ever I will always listen to slowdive a lot more because of how their tone resonates within me. loveless may be the better album but it can be too much to comprehend. it sometimes makes you want to close ...""While I appreciate my bloody valentine for being one of the most daring and unique musicians ever I will always listen to slowdive a lot more because of how their tone resonates within me. loveless may be the better album but it can be too much to comprehend. it sometimes makes you want to close yourself and resist the sound rather than embrace it and it takes strength to open up an let the music come to you. with souvlaki it comes a lot easier. it fills every void in your mind and makes you feel comfortable rather than disoriented. you can criticise slowdive for only going half the way and not for the whole thing but in it's way it predated some post rock bands by 10 and dream pop bands like beach house by nearly 20 years. after seeing the pitchfork doc you realize how personal this album really is and why it hasn't gotten the recognition it deserves at the time. with alison and dagger you got two examples of how great a songwriter neal halstead is and when the sun hits is the best song to come out of the whole dream pop genre to this day 92/100"  [+]  Reply

Funny how their, I think, most accessible album was the most shocking for me. When I looked into VU's music I started with the first album and went in chronological order. After wearing out VU & Nico and White Light/White Heat, I wanted more, so I went on the next album. Imagine the shock I had when I heard the sweet and delicate "Candy Says", the first track off the third album. Keep in mind, I'm coming straight off of the ear-shattering noise jam "Sister Ray", the last track off of their second album. For me, this is as much of a sign of their greatness as their more influential and groundbreaking works, because it shows that they were much more than a noisy art band. "  [+]  Reply

In a way I find criticisms of GnR similar to criticisms of Aerosmith (7os era Aerosmith that is) - it's blues based rock music, of course it doesn't sound entirely new or original. But like Aerosmith, GnR simply did it better than anyone else around. Both bands had a very distinctive lead singer with a huge stage presence (and personally I think both Steven Tyler and Axl were good lyricists for what they were trying to accomplish). Both bands had solid rhythm sections. And both bands had excellent dual guitar work. In a way these bands are the progression of bands like the Rolling Stones, who also had the five piece, two guitar setup, and a very distinctive lead singer. Apart from that, I think it's important when rating music to try and judge it as if it wasn't totally played out. Yes, I'm not necessarily going to search out Welcome to the Jungle or Sweet Child to hear them for the millionth time, but the fact I've heard them so often is entirely separate from whether the songs are actually good. And I defy any fan of rock music to tell me with a straight face that they don't understand why Welcome to the Jungle is played at every sporting event - it's because it's an incredibly exciting song that gets you amped, with one of the most memorable intros of any song I can think of. That said, this isn't a perfect album. In particular, I think the second (roses) side is noticeably weaker than the first (guns) side. But I think the first side contains, at worst, high energy rock songs (It's So Easy and Out Ta Get Me) and at best, two of the most anthemic rock songs ever. Lyrically, these songs do a great job of capturing where GnR and Axl specifically were at while they were recording. Mr. Brownstone and Nighttrain capture the essence of an active drug addiction very well. Mr. Brownstone specifically I think is one of GnR's absolute best tracks, and grievously underrated. I suppose there are some who simply dislike GnR's sound - for me, the first six tracks on this album sound like rock music is supposed to sound like. A real shame that the band was already fracturing (for a multitude of reasons) by the time this album was released, but for this one album, they sound like the greatest rock band in the world."  [+]  Reply

Personally I prefer the group when it stays within the relatively rigid framework which normally applies to the rhythmic music. Then you can then say that I have not understood the group's uniqueness, well, so be it. In any event, is widely agreed that "Red" is one of the big albums in rock history, so if I allow myself to make objections, it is obviously I who is something wrong. The title track "Red" is one of the tracks that I have a little trouble with. It is an instrumental with guitarist Robert Fripp in focus. That he is musical equillibrist is beyond dioscussion, and the sound of the guitar is superb. I think, however, that more than six minutes at the top. In contrast, "Fallen Angel" has everything I like about the group; A beautiful melodic composition by Fripp / Wetton / Palmer-James. Both vocally and instrumentally very convincing, and in this case, the playing time is perfect. "One More Red Nightmare" is a little harder to go to, but it is actually a very interesting compostition, both musically and lyrically. The long instrumental "Providence" may well be hard diet and it contains both harmony and dissonance. As a friend told me, "You can not play music like this, when children are nearby, it could go in their nerves". He may have a point. "Starless" is as beautiful a song as "Fallen Angel" and it may bring to mind the title track on the group's first album. Unfortunately the group here lets the number grow in some instrumentally complex directions, which some will love and others will feel destroy more than it benefits.' If you are unfamiliar with King Crimson, this probably won't be the best album to introduce to you. "In the Court of the Crimson King" was the album that convinced me of the band's musical importance. The sound on this new edition is superb, and moreover the album is expanded with three alternate versions and a DVD containing an interesting live performance from France."  [+]  Reply

That left me feeling that not only was this really the end, but that he was fully aware his end was coming. And if this was his final dance, then he's certainly pulled it off with the same confidence and conviction that he's always had. But, just like his passing, the album cover only helps to bring the album into context. This is the last goodbye, and it is constructed with wondrous precision, care and quality. Musically, it's diverse and most certainly new. Plenty of influences here from a broad range of genres and styles, but it's synthesised in such a way that the resultant sound feels original, crisp and interesting. It's what he's always done best. The themes in the album now, sadly, make a lot more sense. The lyrics are personal and revealing, sometimes saddening but filled with a sense that he was ready to go. It's certainly gloomy, but by no means dark, definitely enjoyable, with plenty to read into further. What's more, the overall structure and composition is fantastic. Tony Visconti has once again done an amazing job, and I thoroughly recommend you listen to all the songs on a good pair of headphones at some point. Order wise, the songs flow from one to the other without a hitch, and I'm seriously glad that "I Can't Give Everything Away" is at the end; it's a final twist in the tale, and it's brilliant. I don't want to let his death get in the way of my verdict for Blackstar, but this is without a doubt the best album since Scary Monsters, and as far as parting gifts go, this is a very good one. Even so long after he began his career, and with his death on the horizon, he managed to reinvent himself just one more time. Whatever this persona comes to be known as, it's certainly the closest we're ever going to get to the man himself. So long, Thin White Duke. And thank you."  [+]  Reply
