Produced by Paul Epworth and Bloc Party. You can't please all of the people all of the time, but Bloc Party certainly did try with their debut album. Silent Alarm crosses genres so many times, it's hard to keep track. The result is a fascinating and well rounded album that sounds better and better with each subsequent listening. So much to like about this..."So Here We Are", "Positive Tension", "Pioneers", "Banquet". A great collection of ambitious and well crafted songs. This deserves every bit of praise that it gets. Kaiser Chiefs are another one of those bands that seem to be exclusively British. They are quite popular in their home country of England, and have won numerous music awards, and sell gazillions of albums. In America, Kaiser Chiefs are not well known at all…perhaps because they are so exclusively British. Employment is their debut album, released in 2005. And it made them stars. In Britain. The album is fast and loud, taking its cues from New Wave and Britpop that came before them. Lots of Na-Na-Na’s and punk energy, synths and loud guitars and tight singing. It doesn’t all work, and it can be tedious in spots, but as a debut album, it shows a lot of promise for sure.

The best tracks here are well worth hearing: “Oh My God”, “Everyday I Love You Less And Less”, and “I Predict A Riot” are absolute fun, while “You Can’t Have It All” and “Modern Way” are fine as well. The rest is a step below, but there’s enough here to keep you entertained. They’ve released seven albums so far, each one a top ten entry on the British charts…even though they haven’t seen the top 100 in America in over a dozen years. They’re interesting for sure, just not as palatable to the American audiences. But if British alternative is your cup of tea, then Kaiser Chiefs may just be for you. They’ll sit nicely among your collection of Oasis and Blur albums.

2005 – CAPITOL

If you were to guess that the top selling album worldwide from 2005 was X&Y by Coldplay, you would be correct. This is, thankfully, not the same Coldplay that found itself meandering around the stage at the Super Bowl with Beyonce and Bruno Mars a decade later. This was the Coldplay that was busy downplaying the “new Radiohead” tag, and that was coming off their excellent second album, A Rush Of Blood To The Head. The pressure was on, but Coldplay was certainly up to the challenge. Welcoming the break from constant touring, the band settled into the studio and created a beautiful album. The critics may have seen it as a letdown after their previous release, but the little girls understand…X&Y is a thing of beauty. That it was as popular as it was is just icing on the cake.

“Speed Of Sound” was a successful hit, and there are several exceptional songs here. “White Shadows”, “Fix You”, “What If” and “Talk” are all great, as is “The Hardest Part”. The atmosphere is airy and expansive, with the band really stretching out with a beautiful and more electronic sound. The real star, as always with Coldplay, is singer Chris Martin, who’s dreamy, sometimes falsetto, voice carries each song it touches to a new level. This is a point in Coldplay’s career when they were really on top of it all. The band would begin moving towards a more outwardly pop sound on their next album, seemingly shooting for hits instead of letting them come naturally, but the early albums by this band, particularly A Rush Of Blood and X&Y, is where you’re going to find the real root of what they are capable of.

2005 – KITCHENWARE

The Back Room is the debut album from the British band Editors. It’s been compared to a number of other bands, but most notably Interpol…these guys sound a lot like Interpol after a night of listening to Joy Division. That’s not a bad thing. Editors has a dark gothic thing going on, but their sound is very full. Singer Tom Smith has an Ian Curtis quality, which helps to keep things dark. Overall, The Back Room stands as a most promising debut, and one that the band has consistently followed up on over the years. It’s very good yet underrated. It has its strengths, while its weaknesses keep it from being a better known work. This is a fine album, but it’s not one that will stay at the front of your mind simply because the bulk of the songs are not that memorable.

Still, they sound great. The better tracks here are among the best of what mid 2000’s Britain had to offer. “All Sparks”, “Bullets”, “Blood” and “Munich” are all fine, and were enough to keep this record a best seller in Europe for years. The rest is good but not amazing, solid but unspectacular. Which sums up the entire career of Editors pretty well. Of their seven albums so far, this one still stands as their best work (along with their second effort, An End Has A Start), although you really can’t go wrong with anything they have done over the years. Yes, they will remind you of Interpol, but this happens in a good way. Editors is a fine band, and the best place to start with them is The Back Room. Always good but never quite great.

Fairport Convention has been going at it for going on 50 years now, but the focus of this collection is their peak period between 1968 and 1976. Acknowledged as the first British folk rock band, Fairport gave us both Richard Thompson and Sandy Denny, and a slew of breathtakingly amazing material. During this eight year period, Fairport released 11 albums, including the classics Unhalfbricking and Liege & Lief. (This album should not be confused with an early compilation of the same name released during the 1970’s.) And, despite an ever changing lineup (there were 18 different members by 1972 alone), their output remained consistently great.

This is the best of that period, and should be considered essential for anyone not wanting to dig up the individual albums. The selections are all well chosen, so there isn’t a single weak track: but you’ll be won over by “A Sailor’s Life”, “Tam Lin”, “Meet On The Ledge”…basically, everything. Fairport gets lost in the shuffle when there are conversations about great British bands, but they are deserving of a place alongside The Beatles, The Stones, The Who and The Kinks. If you only have one Fairport album, get this one. An excellent overview of a great career.
