Symphonic Metal, Progressive Metal, Extreme Metal, Experimental Rock
All the main guys like Dream Theater, Queensryche and similar are still releasing good albums, but no one would call their latest releases some of their best or most ambitious work. Devin however... It's a whole different story. There's not a genre this guy hasn't incorporated in his music in the past, and on Empath most of these experimentations come to life all at once. Within just 1:15 hours of runtime I've heard elements of symphonic metal, progressive, extreme metal, experimental rock, glitch, ambient, pop rock, IDM, jazz fusion... And of course choirs. Lots of choirs. It wouldn't be a stretch to call this his most ambitious work to date. Empath is Devin at his both heaviest and softest, both ambitious and pretentious. Excellent 2019 chart! An album that we both seemed especially drawn to was Purple Mountains, David Berman's swan song before leaving this world. I had a tough time ranking that one, as it's sometimes so unbearably sad to listen to it, knowing what we know now: that Berman was probably contemplating suicide at the time of the album's making. It's hard not hearing it in that context. But it's also beautiful and witty and honest in Berman's signature way. I miss him.
