"Hidden" Gems: Next 100 Albums, Sort Of by babyBlueSedan
Every time I update my overall chart I struggle to limit myself to 100 albums because there are so many albums that I want to mention. I've thought about putting together a "101-200" chart to make this possible, but have never had much desire to do so for a couple reasons. First, the chart would have a lot of repeat artists, and you only need to see Songs: Ohia and Bill Callahan listed a few times to know how the rest of that chart would go. Second, I keep my decade charts up to date for a reason, which is to give some points to albums that didn't quite make the cut.
So after some thought, I've decided on a kind of compromise. This is a list of 100 more great albums that are not in the top 1,000 albums on the site. I've limited it to one album per artist. These are not obscure albums by any means; some of them are very well known. I've given precedence to albums by artists who don't have any albums in the top 1,000 album. I've also (with a couple glaring exceptions) avoided albums by artists who have an album on my overall chart. A lot of these are soft rules, but the top 1,000 rule is concrete. I like this because it lets me highlight genres that are not as well represented on my overall, as well as write a little blurb about the style of the album that hopefully entices you to check it out more than just seeing it listed on a decade chart.
Albums are listed chronologically, at least by year.
(Updated a year later, and tweaked slightly to highlight hidden gems and genres that aren't represented as much on my overall chart. Much heavier on the "hidden gems" than "next 100 favorites" side of things at this point.)

I've barely explored the classic girl group artists but I don't see how this can't be the pinnacle of the genre.

Everyone knows who Nina Simone is, and while Pastel Blues is in our top 1,000 I think this one is better. Nothing here is as good as "Sinnerman," but I think this has more consistently great songs, especially "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair" and "Four Women."

Pained deep soul with incredibly passionate vocals.

If the Beach Boys played bluegrass, they'd sound like this.
His self titled gets most of the praise and while it boasts his best song in "Waiting Around to Die," this one is better overall. The middle stretch is a masterclass in somber, lyrically adventurous country/folk.

Groovy jazz-funk with a couple really great soul tracks.

Really stretching the definition of obscure here, but until it's in the top 1,000 this needs more love. Not just one of the most passionate soul albums, but also one of the most musically diverse.

It's a travesty that this isn't in our top 1,000. One of the best storytellers of all time, Prine could capture both fleeting moments of joy and ingrained sorrow with ease.

Entrancing jazz-funk. The second track is one of the most transcendent jazz tracks I've heard. Jazz fans apparently don't like this but as I'm not a jazz fan that is a plus.
Unabashedly gay country music. At the same time heartbreaking and uplifting. And the playing and songwriting are top notch as well.
