"Hidden" Gems: Next 100 Albums, Sort Of by babyBlueSedan

Every time I update my overall chart I struggle to limit myself to 100 albums because there are so many albums that I want to mention. I've thought about putting together a "101-200" chart to make this possible, but have never had much desire to do so for a couple reasons. First, the chart would have a lot of repeat artists, and you only need to see Songs: Ohia and Bill Callahan listed a few times to know how the rest of that chart would go. Second, I keep my decade charts up to date for a reason, which is to give some points to albums that didn't quite make the cut.

So after some thought, I've decided on a kind of compromise. This is a list of 100 more great albums that are not in the top 1,000 albums on the site. I've limited it to one album per artist. These are not obscure albums by any means; some of them are very well known. I've given precedence to albums by artists who don't have any albums in the top 1,000 album. I've also (with a couple glaring exceptions) avoided albums by artists who have an album on my overall chart. A lot of these are soft rules, but the top 1,000 rule is concrete. I like this because it lets me highlight genres that are not as well represented on my overall, as well as write a little blurb about the style of the album that hopefully entices you to check it out more than just seeing it listed on a decade chart.

Albums are listed chronologically, at least by year.

(Updated a year later, and tweaked slightly to highlight hidden gems and genres that aren't represented as much on my overall chart. Much heavier on the "hidden gems" than "next 100 favorites" side of things at this point.)

The artists claim this isn't a divorce album, but it kind of is, and the combination of folk & rock / songs by Richard & Linda mesh brilliantly despite that. [First added to this chart: 06/06/2020]

Some of the best synth pop I've heard. Very influenced by house music and with hooks that it's impossible to not dance to. [First added to this chart: 06/06/2020]

I'm not big on sophisti-pop, but this shows that the genre can play to longing as well as comfortable satisfaction. The soundtrack to walking to your car in the rain after a first date that didn't pan out. [First added to this chart: 06/06/2020]

Crisp baroque pop, more restrained but also more affecting than most of what XTC did previously.

Undeniable Velvet Underground influence, and yet there's really nothing that sounds like this. Simplistic drumming, staccato vocals, endlessly cute and affecting. [First added to this chart: 06/06/2020]

The title of the first track on this one tells you everything you need to know about what to expect lyrically. As for musically? It's Steven Albini produced noise rock, what do you think? It's just better than most of the rest. [First added to this chart: 06/07/2020]

Some of the mathiest Midwest emo you'll find that's completely removed sonically from both the initial Midwest emo period of the 90's and the revival of the 2010s. [First added to this chart: 06/06/2020]

You know those blockbuster, guest-heavy albums DJ Khaled always tried to make? This is what that concept, but successful, sounds like. Terrific guests that capture the musical landscape of 2017, and better songs. [First added to this chart: 06/06/2020]
