It's that time of year again. The band that (as of this year in 2022) has been together for 46 hours, has dropped their fourth album. With our good YouTube musical friends Rob Scallon and Andrew Huang, I always watch the behind the scenes video before I stream the record; it gets me even more in mood for it.
But sadly, this is perhaps their most mid set yet. Not mid as in what everybody says now, but the mid as in neither the lows nor the highs or the previous 3 records. It's also quite frankly their project with the most amount of silliness and chaos (hence the title and even the goofy album cover). If you notice, they get sillier with every year (first one was the most serious, then it just goes sideways ?).

I have a few theories as to why this isn't as rewarding of a listen as Ten Hours, Gotta Record Everything Good (both of those that have grown on me) or even Gourmet Ravioli.

The first and most obvious one being that Andrew sings way too much more than Rob. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy his voice but Rob's indie-inspired vocals rings of superior appeal to me. Besides It's Halloween where he just repeats the title, no other song has him on lead. What worked on the other records was the fact that their vocals were divided on lead. But of course, the best thing is the 2 harmonizing, that is always a win and they do that on most of the tracks, making them more joyful.

The second theory is there's also some heavy metal stuff going on, and it's in the lesser positive end on this imo. The way Rob played the metal-ish guitar on most of the songs, are a far cry from the punk rock and midwest emo songs that were much more replayable, actively fun and musically pristine. It's definitely bad at all per se, but it's a step down. Not only that, but the type of metal that Chaos is filled with, like Djent and Traditional Sludge, are not my favorite types of metal either. Also, if you haven't figured out by now, I would take punk music over metal music 6 days of the week basically. Take the songs Don't Go To My House (from Ten Hours), October 1 and Do You Want To? (from Gourmet Ravoli), and especially Temporary (from GREG) and see that these, either fun or serious, are an entire different league than those of Chaos.

Third theory is that I cannot find that many wholesome little moments of musical interaction that gives the songs (as Patrick Bateman would say) a big boost, nor the simple one-liners. Those that come closest are "My dentist doesn't make much money", and "You know I'm the riff lord (RIFF)" and they don't capture the magical feeling that moments on the previous 12-hour recorded releases had (mainly GREG). Lyrics-wise, I mean the song Lonely Angel sums it up kinda, I feel like it's missing something.

The fourth theory ties to the fact that this is also the first time they didn't really make a song about beginning- nor a song about ending the recording session. However, we get like 3 different Halloween songs this time around; Spooky Time that opens the record on heavy metal guitar, Jangly Bones with the sheer excellence of 2-string guitar (if it is that), and It's Halloween getting somewhat nostalgic back to the time when I celebrated halloween as a kid (it's funny how that's the second-longest song on the record, yet it's only repeating the song title). The problem is that none of these new Halloween songs match the level of Trick Or Treat (from the GREG predecessor). That song had a more fun melody, and the rhythmic lyricism was undeniable: none of those 3 quiet have that.

The fifth and last theory is because of the amount of different instruments being used for this album, the production gets mutty. When I listened back to the other 3 records, they sounded much cleaner and professional. This doesn't make it bad, just less impressive.

Yet, I want to apologize for being a bit mean in this review, because frankly nobody (especially me) shouldn't take away that this is still a very fun album to listen to. 18 and a halfminutes and not one second felt bad. As I said, mid also comes in that it's also their album with their highest lows yet, meaning there was a worse song on their predecessors than this one's worst, that being Headless since I don't think it captures as great of a musical dynamic or melodiousness as any of the songs it stands against (but it's still an okay track).
Then, we get another excellent indie rocker with Good Enough (the stellar guitar playing and relatable lyrics makes this a highlight - that amazing chorus is a discography best of), and also our first country/bluegrass song in Left My Pants In Chicago - you can probably guess how it's gonna sound just by its title. But that song's suuuuuper fun, it beats nearly any modern country acts at their own game just for its spectacular aesthetic.

The mini-album ends on two highlights. Love To Say I Love You (Huang coming through with another acoustic melodic mini-masterpiece in the same vein of Valerie and Miracle from the earlier records - this song actually feels outta place in context with the other tracks), and the grand finale Find A Way with (I think) the most amount of instruments in a First of October song yet. That track is not as epic as Never Say Goodbye in any sense (from 2021's Gotta Record Everything Good) but it's still an awesome track that contains the chemistry these two have, highly. At the end of the day, another solid job, guys. You made one of my favorite records of the year, yet again. See you in 2023 (hopefully). Also, get Greg back!

Sidenote: when First of October releases a new album in....well october, my thoughts keep circling around about the fact that hey, this year's almost over and my life is still in the same doggamn mess. Oh well, least I got quality music coming out, e.g. this!
