Respectable Street is a classic with a timeless English subject matter. "I listen to this one on vinyl all the time since my uncle gave me an original copy along with Purple Rain. Some of the songs sound a bit too similar and are either way too short, or go on too long. But I still have to say that Mountains & Sometimes it Snows In April are among his greatest musical achievements. Sometimes In Snows In April carries a deeper emotional weight for me, and I'm sure for others, concerning Prince died in April, and the song is about the concept character, Tracy, dying. I find myself skipping much of the album to get to those songs, along with Kiss. It's not because the rest of the songs are bad by any means, but those three are so classic they kind of overshadow everything else. This, along with Around The World In A day are his trippiest albums; but there is still plenty of funk and pop to go around."  [+]  Reply

"As most mainstream pop albums, it's fairly inconsistent. There's a lot of filler (How you get the girl, This love, I know places), but the songs that do work are pretty good, I must admit. I think that the run of "Blank space", "Style", "Out of the woods" and "All you had to do was stay" is great, and those four are the best tracks on the album by a mile. The second half, though, is a little lackluster, but then again, I don't think "1989" was ever designed to be more than a collection of singles. Some of them are great, yes, but the album as a whole doesn't hold for too long. It's not incredibly original either, since "Welcome to New York" rips off the piano riff from "Baba O'Riley", "Wildest dreams" seems like a cover of a Lana del Rey song, "Shake it off"'s beat is heavily reminiscent of Pharrell Williams's "Happy", "Clean" sounds a lot like Lorde and "How you get the girl" is so Katy Perry. The worst thing about these influences is that they're blatantly displayed but Taylor doesn't try to do anything unique with them on the aforementioned tracks. On the other hand, the lyrics are not incredibly mature, but they often manage to sound relatable and nuanced enough, and like I said, the tracks that work are really good, especially "Style", which I think it's her best song to date without a doubt. So to sum up, I would say "1989" is an alright diversion with a couple of gems, but it's far from being a memorable album."  [+]  Reply

"When Richard Thompson released this album, his first with his wife Linda, he had already a relatively long recording career behind him. As a founder member of Fairport Convention he was the group on their first five albums. His characteristic guitarplaying style can also be heard on Sandy Denny's...""When Richard Thompson released this album, his first with his wife Linda, he had already a relatively long recording career behind him. As a founder member of Fairport Convention he was the group on their first five albums. His characteristic guitarplaying style can also be heard on Sandy Denny's early solo albums and he had released his own soloalbum "Henry the Human Fly" in 1972. During his time with Fairport Convention Thompson matured a lot as a songwriter and many of the band's early favourites were either written or co-written by Thompson. His inspiration by traditional British music also became still more clear. Many of the songs on "Henry" and "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight" actually sound like they were traditional folk-songs. His collaboration with Linda lasted for 8 years and resulted in 6 great albums. This their first is often regarded as the strongest with Richard's songwriting extraordinary inspired and varied, and his distictive voice blends beautifully with Linda's on these great songs. The terrific opener "When I Get to the Border", sung by Richard, is catchy with optimistic lyrics. A little unsual for Thompson, whose lyrics often are dark and sad. Equally catchy ( and optimistic ) is the title track which deserved to be hit beautifully sung by Linda. Heartbreakingly beautiful is also the sad ballad "Withered and Died", sung by Linda in way that makes you think of her friend Sandy Denny. The dark side of Richard's songwriting become apprent on songs like "Down Where the Drunkards Roll", "Has He Got a Friend For Me" and especially "The End of the Rainbow" . Even the catchy "We'll Sing Hallelujah" has some pretty dismal lyrics. The budget for this album was supposedly very limited, but it does show anywhere. Great arrangements, crisp sound and best of all strong songwriting and palying from first track till the closer "The Great Valerio". The bonus-tracks found on some versions are three 1975 live-recordings - nice to have but some may find that they disturb the very consistent feel of the original album, which I won't hesitate to call a masterpiece. This album is below Amok, Angles, 21 and the King of Limbs for the decade. What the fuck. And to see Rubber as not a top rated track really hurts me, its such an incredible song. Other great songs are Get Away (obviously, with it probably being my favourite song of the decade), Operation, The Wall and Suicide Policeman. But there aren't any weak tracks on here at all. However, it is also indisputably overhyped, a prime example of the way popstars of the 21st century post-album-distribution hellscape of streaming can waltz into mass critical appraisal with a single foray into big concept driven "high art" full album. Beyonce has proven already with Lemonade that she can be more than a singles artist, so I don't want to suggest that it's entirely bad faith, just more that let's settle at pretty good at best rather than "revolutionary". Moreover, people are and will continue to attach other weirdly hyperbolic triumphalist tags to this – i.e. music as celebration of [insert your choice of really anything] – and that's nice and all, but this really only is somewhat convincing when Beyonce is looking back and celebrating 70s/80s black musicianship, a well trodden path in the last decade. Early tracks like Alien Superstar and Cuff it are perfect examples of modernised disco, they are genuinely fun songs to return to, but god the areas in this indulging in contemporary pop and trap trends, as if they too are – in a way – as iconic as Donna Summer ruin this. Energy is the first completely terrible song, exemplifying the worst of Beyonce-does-Jay Z nonsense. While Break My Soul's sudden interruption of it makes for a very fun opening of the single (which, when initially heard in isolation seemed very cringe), the irony in that opening sample is a little lost by Beyoncé doing it rather than James Ferraro. I think Renaissance starts to get back on track with Virgo's Groove, but the backend of this is littered with sleepfest tracks like Move and All Up In Your Mind, which honestly should have been binned (Virgo's Groove -> Pure/Honey would have been a nice transition). Summer Renaissance's celebration of I Feel Love, which should also retrospectively be a celebration of "Renaissance" – or a track that rationalises why Beyonce needed to do this – just ends up making me want to listen to the original 12" to be brutally honest. Beyonce is at her best in Renaissance when she is subtle rather than overt with the referentiality. It's a record that could open a window to the past for zoomers, but worst case this will date itself quickly."  [+]  Reply
