"When I purchased a copy of this album, I was a junior high kid, and it was not an easy album to understand. I could only buy one album a month back then (naturally), so I would listen to the album every day, and I could gradually digest the beauty (and aggressive nature) of the album over time. A...""When I purchased a copy of this album, I was a junior high kid, and it was not an easy album to understand. I could only buy one album a month back then (naturally), so I would listen to the album every day, and I could gradually digest the beauty (and aggressive nature) of the album over time. As the band called it quit in 1974, I thought I would never see the band again, and this was true with this formation at least. For a young boy in Japan, it was beyond imagination that 30 years later, the boy would meet all the four members of the band (though in separate interview opportunities.) So, to me, this album is a very special one. Musically speaking, as Jamie Muir had left the band (who, the recent Larks' Tongues box set revealed, was the first member of the new formation and the key to the jazz/improvisation aspect of the band), the other members were forced to fill the role Jamie had played: spontaneities. For this reason, the album is fundamentally "live." The most structured track on this album is paradoxically Fracture, which is based on the persistent riffs and highly technical (and mathematical) guitar work by Robert Fripp. You can also find "funk" elements under the influence of Herbie Hancock or even Miles. It is not a perfect album, but well conveys the spirit of '73 when the music was still more or less free from commercialism. "  [+]  Reply

Without a doubt, this for me is top of the tree. The vocal delivery by RJD coupled with the overall musicianship which includes the best guitar work and drumming I have heard on any of the other Black Sabbath albums seals my decision. Every track is class, some with a real sinister atmosphere like 'Sign of the Southern Cross' and 'Falling off the Edge of the World'. There are equally, the really heavy workouts like the title track and 'Voodoo'. The sleeve art lets the album down a bit, had that been more scarey it may have encouraged more people to buy it when it was first released. It has taken me ages to track down a decent copy on vinyl but was most definitely well worth the wait!"  [+]  Reply

A fantastic collection of tracks from the moody quite heavy 'When I Touch You' which builds up to a fantastic acid sounding guitar crescendo. 'Street Worm' showcases some amazing guitar work which is almost metal in its delivery. The upbeat 'Morning Will Come' introduces brass stabs adding to the overall interest of the album. The slower 'Soldier' plays on vocal harmonies which work beautifully. Overall a real treat of a listening experience."  [+]  Reply

(I'm looking at you, Ian McCulloch.) But XTC is different. This is actually my favorite XTC album. Every song is good, even the one "My Dictionary," about Andy Partidge's divorce. The production has its pros and cons. At times, its flatness creates a sense of exhaustion that enhances the emotions of the lyrics; at other times, it's just dreary. I'm a big fan of most of his LP releases but this one stands out as a truly exceptional piece of work. His use of loops can easily repel the casual listener who doesn't appreciate the intricacies of electronic music. From a distance it is repetitive and cold but the genius of The Field's art is that the reality is the complete opposite of the distant, casual listener. Once you accept the invitation to enter this world that Willner has created then the subtle overlayering and texture begin to present themselves with real warmth. It is packed full of intricate shifts/changes whilst maintaining the hypnotic, repetitive, looping structure that holds it all together. The best way to describe the experience for me is stepping into an expansive soundscape with a colourful undulating terrain heading toward a distant pixelated horizon. I absolutely love the sparkling, glittery intro to Everyday which then develops into a 'sublime' 7 minutes of electronic bliss with intermittent sweeping digital breezes and a soothing female voice looping through."  [+]  Reply
