A few numbers were already a ye..."""December's Children" was a U.S. only album that only in a few cases collided with the European releases, and for this reason the record was / is particularly interesting for Stones collectors. The music is somewhat a mixed bag, consisting of EP tracks and singles. A few numbers were already a year or two old when the album was released in December 1965. Half of the songs are Jagger / Richards originals and the rest are cover versions of various other artists' songs. Among these, you'll notice the excellent interpretation of Arthur Alexander's ballad "You Better Move On". The energetic and raw opening track "She Said Yeah" is another standout. Two tracks are live recordings showing that the Stones were also a highly competent live band. Among the Jagger / Richards originals important is the recently released single "Get Off Of My Cloud" / "I'm Free"; both songs among the very best from this period. Two very fine, and often overlooked, melodic ballads are to me the album's biggest highlights. "Blue Turns Gray two" is also technically a great recording, while "The Singer Not the Song" is an equally impressive number, which maybe has not been given the same "finish". This song can also be found in an excellent cover version by Alex Chilton. Rolling Stones' "answer" to "Yesterday" is another of the disc's most memorable numbers. "Gotta Get Away" is more on the regular but still okay. The slightly uneven overall impression and the somewhat short playing time makes me give just 4 stars"  [+]  Reply

In my opinion is the story of a community of Eskimos who live in the Arctics. Then come the American colonizers, with their machines and their capitalism. After violent brainwashing manipulations (in tracks 4 and 5) eventually the Eskimos are converted to the capitalist religion (with the prayer "CO-CA COLA IS LIFE!") The story is acted (not simply told) like you are a curious voyeurist, and you can understand it through symbolic sounds (the cry of a baby could be the purity, then there are the american machines in tracks 3 and 4). Every sound has a role in the story, so that when you listen to the machines, the power of their symbolic meaning hits you more than 1000 words) Of course this is just my interpretation, but it works. This is art, and art is open to interpretations. I just care about the fact that if I listen to Eskimo this way..the effect is really powerful, envolving, vivid, like a movie made of sounds! Musically is really appreciating their use of "wind" and other natural sounds, it's at the same time one of the early ambient albums, an art performance, kind of tribal music, a fake documentary, a work of field recordings...! I admit that some parts in tracks 3 4 and 5 are not that vivid, and the album is a bit boring there. That's why my vote is "only" 8,5"  [+]  Reply

And you can definitely hear the cohesiveness of this band on "Twice Removed". There are many standout tracks in here (Penpals, People Of The Sky, Coax Me, Shame Shame, Snowsuit Sound, Before I Do), but what's even more impressive is that the tracks that might be a little less shining on their own all fit well within the flow of the album.
