Post subject: R&B, Soul, & Funk Music: Competition and Discussion
Welcome to what might become the ultimate R&B, Soul, & Funk Music thread. This thread is not only to share your favorite/best R&B, Soul, & Funk Music records to compete in the Genre Olympics, but also to learn and share all you want/can about R&B, Soul, & Funk Music and all it's sub-genres.
Please see the links below for the multiple ways this "genre" can be viewed.
Here are the top 10 finalists for the R&B/Soul Genre Olympics.
Wow - this was quite the competition. Quite a few great runners up, but here are the top ten!
Next steps are for anyone and everyone to rank the following albums (even if you didn't submit during the original semi-finalist rounds). See OP on how the point system works (#1 weighted with 10 points and #10 with 1 point). Many of you have given commentary on why you love the albums you do, but as you vote, it might be fun to say what you love about each album. Enjoy!
1. 29 points as voted by sethmadsen, Tha1ChiefRocka, AfterHours, Jimmy Dread, Stover75
Competition:
Submit nominations of your top 10 albums (with which region it comes from) - where #10 = 1 point and #1 = 10 points. The ten albums with the most points from these nominations will be in the running for the Olympic medal for the genre and then people could listen to all ten and rank the ten with the same points structure to determine the winners. Timeline to be determined.
Discussion:
1. Social/historical/cultural significance
2. Some kind of question you want answered/discussed
3. Thoughts on the production/recordings
4. Analytical critique
5. Interesting stuff about the band/artist
6. Anything else you want to share/ask
Well I can't help but say that Soul/R&B and it's sub-genre's have been tugging at my heart strings since I was a kid. While a good chunk of the music I appreciate more at a single level, these albums have won my heart and is what I submit for my top 10:
Honorable mentions:
Hot Buttered Soul by Isaac Hayes
The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III) by Janelle Monáe
Here's Little Richard by Little Richard (as Rhythm & Blues, secondary genre)
Don't know if I will post my absolute favorite albums considering they would belong more in the hip hop genre. But albums like To Pimp a Butterfly, Talib's-Eardrums Outkast's first album and Carried Away by People Under The Stairs would get on that list. However my personal faves from this would be
Sade's Love Deluxe
Jamiroquai's Emergency on Planet Earth
Gil Scott Heron's Bridges
Also shout out to Zapp. One of the most overlooked funk bands out there. Can get stuck in this forum for days if I want to and hopefully later I could make a list.
If nothing else, I hope someone learns to love this song [Inner City Blues], and then goes and gives it the 100 it deserves. It's not even breaking the top 500.
It is indeed the greatest funk/funky soul song of all time and one of my favorites.
EDIT: I had already rated it a 100.

Well I can't help but say that Soul/R&B and it's sub-genre's have been tugging at my heart strings since I was a kid. While a good chunk of the music I appreciate more at a single level, these albums have won my heart and is what I submit for my top 10:
1. Stand! by Sly & The Family Stone
2. I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You by Aretha Franklin
3. Live At The Apollo by James Brown
4.What's Going On by Marvin Gaye
5. Mothership Connection by Parliament
6. Otis Blue / Otis Redding Sings Soul by Otis Redding
7. Innervisions by Stevie Wonder
8. Back To Black by Amy Winehouse
9. Superfly by Curtis Mayfield
10. Black Messiah by D'Angelo And The Vanguard
Great list. The first seven are hard to argue with as the greatest R&B albums of all time.
Jazz and R&B are the genres I know best -- in the case of R&B, it's not so much that I know it better than rock, but that the world knows it less. Boiling it down to ten is brutal, but here's my starting list:
1.
Star Time by James Brown
I avoided comps in the jazz comp, but not fair to 50s and 60s R&B to avoid here.
