Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. An interetsing and unusal propostion, that is supremely atmospheric and bold. There's plenty of drama and scale here, but also serious class and confidence.
Armstrong's production is excellent. The sound is distinctive and colorful, and helps to paint a number of excellent soundscapes and scenes, particularly on Weather Storm, Laura's Theme and Balcony Scene.
More than that, there are some excellent fusions of style here, with the piano being used as one base instrument that links the whole album together. From that, Armstrong branches into electronica, lounge and other genres, all with a shared solidness and strength.
Perhaps its only weakness is its length. There's no real way to avoid the length of the songs and the grandeur they all hold, and although that is very good, it can easily become tiresome after the first listen.
But, as far as atmosphere and emotion are concerned, The Space Between Us has it covered. In a year when a number of excellent experimental albums were released, this one stands out for its vision and distinctive sound.
