Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 18% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.1/100, a mean average of 73.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 74.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 24.3.

It's definitely a fascinating album - not just to listen to, but also the story of its creation, and the reputation it's built up since then.

I don't think it's quite true to say "you either loathe it or love it, with nothing in between", or "you start out loathing it and at some point it clicks and you instantly love it". Because honestly, my opinion of it really is somewhere in between those two extremes!

Things I definitely like about it:

- The Cap'n's voice (except in certain tracks, like "Hobo Chang Ba").
- Many of his lyrics (and in some cases, like "Well", his poetry).
- The unusual production (like the stop-start noises of line-by-line tape recording on "Orange Claw Hammer").
- The funny bits, like "The Blimp" and the between-track conversation. (I'm a sucker for the inclusion of the definite article in "That's right, The Mascara Snake!") I really think the whole album is a lot more palatable if you approach it with a sense of humour, rather than thinking of it as an avant-garde capital-W work to be chin-strokingly admired by people like that Scaruffi bloke.

However, the jury's still out on what I think of the instrumental aspects of the music. I'm not going to complain that it's "chaotic rubbish!", because I *do* believe the story that the way it sounds was all intentional because of how the Magic Band had rehearsed to perfectionist standards. And there are catchy hooks in there (there's a great bass riff on "Ant Man Bee"). There are bits I like, bits I don't. But overall, eighty minutes of clashing noises is a lot to take in all at once, so it's not surprising I haven't yet come to a definite opinion about it.

At the moment, I prefer Safe As Milk, Clear Spot and The Spotlight Kid - you get the Captain's incredible voice and fascinating lyrics, but the instrumental elements are a lot more *hummable*!

This is possibly the most divisive album in the history of music with some people saying this is a misunderstood masterpiece and others saying it is meaningless nonsense. I tried my best to avoid the polarising comments and just listen to it without looking too deep into the reasonings behind why people love or hate this record. I found myself to thoroughly enjoy this record with the crazy song structures and crazy ramblings from Beefheart working well together. His lyrics are zany but full of humour with several of the lines on here genuinely making me laugh with their outlandish nature. What impressed me the most is the organised chaos from the musicians and after several listens you begin to realise that they are playing like this on purpose. The layering of multiple instruments playing at the same time but playing almost opposing rhythms is impressive and is what gives off the chaotic atmosphere and no one sounds like they are playing in unison. However, when you listen in depth you can begin to pick out the individual performances and they are so impressive as they are of such a high quality and demonstrate the control they have. I love discovering these new layers which I otherwise miss and it makes it a joy to revisit this record even if it can be slightly painful if I'm not listening closely. This makes me realise why people might detest the record as it is elongated and has to be worked on or given a lot of attention to so it can be even slightly enjoyed or understood. Overall, this album is not without its faults and I don't think it is a misunderstood masterpiece but what it does have is outstanding instrumental performances and it is extremely experimental making it one of the best albums to listen to in my opinion.

I had been preparing for this album for a long time. I heard it was unlistenable. I'm not sure what this says about me at this point in my life but I found it pretty enjoyable. Would never listen again, probably (OR MAYBE YES??), but with cacophonic records hitting the mainstream in the past couple of years (black midi, Black Country New Road) I think we can finally trace a starting point to all of that music right here.

By the third listen I found any enjoyment in this album, it's still not something that I would listen to daily, but it is intriguing me.
I think that this is too long, and some tracks are too avant-garde for me to enjoy.
The best tracks: Ella Guru, Moonlight On Vermont, My Human Gets Me Blues.

I disagree with people who think this is all anti-music, songs like Ella Guru and Sugar and Spikes are bangers and Moonlight on Vermont is one of the best rock songs ever, but this is incosistent as fuck, almost as if the Don mocks what the rest of the band worked so hard to achieve. Overall I prefer their next album as it cuts away the filler.

After two listens it is still offputting for me and I can't see what others can in this record. There is a couple of listenable tracks but this is mostly nonsensical off-beat noise.

Perfection. The culmination of the entirety of music, the peak of the mountain it had been building towards. Beautiful, sweet cacophony.

This album opened my eyes (and ears) to an entire genre of experimentation that I didn't know I needed.

I’ve wanted to listen to this album for years and it is finally on Apple Music. I had very high expectations going into this album and this is typically music that I like. I was extremely disappointed after my first listen of this album. I usually try to have an open mind and view the music from different angles but I cannot find many appealing qualities about this album. The music itself was pretty awful and all over the place in an unenjoyable way, and didn’t even slightly have a structure to it. It got pretty old and nauseating after the first 5 songs. A few songs were somewhat interesting, the best probably being “Moonlight on Vermont” but a little more than 3/4 of my way through the album I had to stop listening. Sorry. Just listened to Safe as Milk and I really really like it a lot better than this! Maybe if the album had better production it would be better, everything seems sort of flat
