Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Pieces of You and Spirit were good albums, blending pop and folk with an awesome voice and decent songwriting ability (although much of her material was written by others). Unfortunately, everything since was a disappointment, particularly 0304. Although most of her albums are sub par, I rated her generously because her first 2 albums alone make a good and memorable artist.
Started out great but lost me with 3121 and her latter country route. Still the first three albums are solid and she seems like a nice person
Pieces Of You was great. Spirit was awful and kind of put me off the rest of her work.
