The dirty churning angst on this recording is so very raw, yet understated... powerful beyond explanation.... This is not the "Dance to the Music" Sly... This is the ruminatin' dark and burnin' out Sly... a hard rude awakening coming over the war-torn survivors of the Sixties sunshine utopia... now a sick joke, in the form of race riots across the country and the nation in flames.... Sly even mocks his own naivete with the return of the "Thankyoufaletinmebemicelf" refrain, words updated to reflect a new awareness... Despite album notes crediting The Family, Sly recorded much of the album by himself, instrument by instrument, and layered the tracks together with vocals....Maybe that partly accounts for a sort of lo-fi dirty sound that compliments the mood, lyrics, and vocal style here so perfectly... It's no frills hard and frustrated writhing funk.... When I think of the stunning quality of the honest and gut-wrenching emotion here, and the time, I think of two albums from other artists: Plastic Ono Band album, and especially "Tonight's the Night", by Neil Young... another very moody, thoughtful, sentimental but pissed-off album in the wake of the hopeful hippie revolution.... I have listened to "Riot" hundreds of times over the years... It's just blown me away along with so very many other fans and musicians.... Somehow the underlying tension and malevolent struggle to bust the hell out of the pit of despair has struck a very personal chord in so many of us at some point in our lives.... As good an example as any of the miraculous and transcendent power of music to convey something beyond mere word and sound.... If you know, then you know...."  [+]  Reply

"I remember when Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds toured this album. Theyopened with Into My Arms and Cave had a terrible time with the first line "I don' t believe in an interventionist god" it took him 4 or 5 gos to get through it and ages to complete the song. It was at a large many thousand venue & we sat waiting for TC to appear & when she did it was just her, with one microphone, one acoustic guitar and a single chair for the entire gig ( in fact she sat down for the entire performance) . The ultimate intimate gig for a stadium. Needless to say the crowd sat spell bound and you could have heard a pin drop. Oh and Tracy barely spoke 2 words the whole night her shyness was palpable, she just sat on that chair & let her music do the talking. Whenever I hear this album it always takes me back to that night and one of the most unique concerts I ever had the privilege of attending. And yes this is a fantastic album."  [+]  Reply

Donuts is so much more than just a beat tape, it's the final swan-song of a dying man who felt that in his final moments he had to push himself into making something worth being remembered by. 29 out of the 31 tracks were recorded from a hospital bed in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with nothing but an Boss SP-303 small 45 record player his friends had brought him as a gift, Dilla was undergoing treatment for TPP and lupus, records that his mother would bring him were used as the sources of the sampling for the album. It's a common complaint that all of the songs here are too short and fleeting, but to me it's perfect. It's sort of hauntingly symbolic of how life itself is too short and fleeting, but personal meaning aside, every song here is so lush and beautiful, tiny little details are spread across all 31 tracks, it's impossible to listen to them and not hear something new. I wish they could go on forever. I really do. I am not worthy of listening to this. I can't even believe this thing exists. I listen to this and I think about how terrifying death is, how scared Dilla must have been. there are no words to describe how breathtaking this music is. fuck. RIP."  [+]  Reply

Something else, is the album where Ray Davies finally lands on his feet. His songs are like miniature kitchen sink comedy dramas featuring all sorts of everyday characters from envied schoolmate, David Watts, to the courting couple Terry and Julie in the fantastically beautiful, Waterloo sunset. Ray is on top form here, especially on, Harry rag, tin soldier man, and the aforementioned, David Watts, and, Waterloo sunset, but Dave also contributes one of the records best songs in, death of a clown. It's a wonderful album, of it's time, yes, but also relevant today because of it's humanity. A lot of people claim that The Kinks best LP is the next release, the village green, but for me it's this one. Excellent. "  [+]  Reply
