I exclusively listened to rock (Green Day, AC/DC, The Beatles, Sex Pistols, Alice Cooper) when I was younger, to the point where I thought that any other genre was terrible, I would never go out of my way to try to discover music I've never heard and I was never obsessive about listening to music until I discovered Muse.
When I first heard Time is Running Out, I just wanted to find out more about this band and go out of my way to listen to anything by them. What I discovered was a whole discography of diverse, melodic modern rock that I've never heard anything like before and I was the one who introduced them to myself. I've never introduced music to myself before and found out it was very rewarding.
Since my favorite Muse songs were on this album, (Stockholm Syndrome, Time is Running Out, HYSTERIA) I went out during a huge snow storm, bought it, and went home to just sit and listen to it. I never really listened to albums without skipping to my favorite songs before so this sort of approach to an album was new to me. I put it in my CD player, turned my speakers up extremely loud, and had an experience that changed my whole perspective on music.
The music wasn't just heavy or catchy, it was also beautiful, somber, and atmospheric, stuff i never took into account when listening to music. I loved the orchestrations, I loved the swelling electronics, every song blew my mind, even the mellow "Endlessly". I felt like this music was just made for me, an album I could call my own. My whole perspective on music exploded in just 1 hour, after that I just loved discovering any music all on my own, stopped prejudging entire genres and bands, and fell in love with albums as a whole.
There may be albums that are better than Absolution,there may be bands better than Muse, but there's no music that means more to me than this album and this band.
