Top 25 Greatest Music Albums
by Wazzup

Massive Prog Rock fan, generally a rock fan in general.
Long songs that take a musical journey are generally positive in my eyes, songs with direction. Whether it is Metal, Jazz, Classical or Electronic. But Rock has always been my favorite.
Also, I have really recently been getting into Post Rock. gy!be and Sigur Ros are large favorites of mine.

If I had to pick favourite tracks, and not albums.
Echoes - Pink Floyd would be the top, hands down.

A clear favorite, each track brings something different but adds to the overall sound. Awesome, happy Post-Rock sound and essential crescendocore. Full of spine tingling swells and completely uplifting chord changes. Notable moments are in Glosoli at 4:33 - amazing explosion of sound, then several moments in Hoppipolla where you can hear this dissonant major 2nd between the trumpets (for a direct example right on 3:13), Milano, at the two parts where there is a stirring release of music and noise and of course in Svo Hljótt at about 6:30 where everything dies off. A breathtaking listen to from start to finish. [First added to this chart: 09/12/2010]

An intense, emotionally draining listen from start to finish. The Dead Flag Blues' first section up until the train sequence is amazing and inspires imagery, as does the entire album. East Hastings is the highlight of the album, astonishing build up that stops and changes right before you expect it to. A heavily string based section takes over and then it dies right down again for the amazing hits that start at 9:19 and continue to the biggest build up and release ever.
Providence is a much less dark and scary song, it starts with a thoughtful speech and brief message before delving into a dissonant, yet somehow regal tune (if you can call it that). Then the glockenspiel takes over, and then the drums, and then the band jams out. The tune returns in a militaristic fashion. I really like this album for the room it gives for interpretation and because of such minimal lyrics and dialogue, you have to work it out from the music. It really seems like a apocalyptic message, from the first track through the second.

The whole album is something quite astonishing, an awesome mash of styles into a scalpel of sound, clean and clear. Radiohead's best. Bodysnatchers is an awesome, hard hitting jam with a formidable fuzz riff. The outro is excellent with Collins tearing some harsh notes under Yorke's desperate vocals. But their best song comes next. Nude has some awe-inspiring moments, sheer spine tingling. The biggest one is at 2:26 with the strings pulling of the most sublte, most minute yet most mind melting chord change and just lets it hang and fall off. The big second is the obvious one - at 3:10 with Yorke coming in with "Oooo" This is possibly my favorite track on the list. Other good mentions go to Weird Fish Arpeggi which has an excellent build up and drop off - which goes back into a nice turn of subject. Reckoner, for obvious reasons and House of Cards - it's simple, but it's eerie vocals and atmospheric guitars are sublime. [First added to this chart: 01/17/2011]

Such a sad, provoking, poignant album. The lyrical and musical ideas throughout (not to mention the storyline) is such a depressing mix that is just unreal. It really makes you feel something, which is something most music cannot do. It hits the 'emotional nuclear weapons' dealing with cancer, death, suicide and abortion and Gary Silberman pulls it off with sublime style. [First added to this chart: 07/18/2011]

Such a fantastic album:
The feeling of Pink Floyd, the guitaring of The xx, the atmosphere of a Gothic Cathedral and the vocals of a lion, it's just sublime.
And, it's unlike something I've heard before.

Close to the Edge is a fantastic album. Let's get that out of the way. But I'm not oign to talk about the album, I'm going to talk about the song. The title track, 'Close To The Edge' is simply one of the best pieces of music ever written by a human. It's a perfect balance between chaos and order, emotion and songwriting and complexity and simplicity. Featuring virtuoso musicianship from all member of the band as well as sublime blending of sections and tone colours. When the church organ beams with Anderson's voice withering into it there is simply a feeling of awe over me before it quickly descends back into frenzied chaos - Wakeman's keyboard solo slowly ringing through before it takes the fore. The piece is mind blowing and a song that can be truly, truly appreciated for its musicianship, complexity and sheer listenability. [First added to this chart: 01/03/2012]

Popol Vuh were one of the few Krautrock acts that refused to use synthesised instruments and their delicate mix of Piano, electric guitar, Oboe and voice create a perfect feeling of... well... perfection. If one instrument had been blown up a little, or made more apparent it would have destroyed the careful equilibrium of the instrumentation. And the song writing, too, is careful and planned and delicate and wonderful. If meditation and exploring the world were the same thing, this is album that would go with it. It's complex enough to listen to yet smooth and beautiful enough to have just playing in the background, too.
Wonderful, wonderful album.

Severeal tracks on this album are mediocre - but the final track more than makes up for this. Echoes is a mind blowing, underwater space trip through musical dimensions and sonic masterpieces. It starts slow, and builds up to a small duo like section between the piano and drums, when the main build up happens, the minor arpeggio (that changes chord twice mid run) signals the start of the heavenly verse, harmonies shared between Gilmour and Wright and a stunning band section, led by the bass and keys. The first guitar solo starts at 5:23 and continues to 7:00. It's en extravagant exploration of the Strat's sound, slow moves and perfect bends continue to soar over the bands' slow tempo and intense time markings (12/8) and it gets higher and louder and swells and moves and glides through everything, cutting the sound like a razor while the hammond fills everything out with a that jaw-dropping classic rock sound. At 7:00, the main 2nd part starts, featuring another (this time 4 minute) guitar solo that flies over [First added to this chart: 09/12/2010]

What originally seemed like a series of countourless soundscapes slowly turned into realisation that this was an intense, varied, amazing album. Sigur Ros came into their own style of Post Rock with heavy, saturated textures and Jonsi's soaring falsetto vocals. [First added to this chart: 10/24/2011]

Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 83.0/100, a mean average of 82.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 81.4/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 10.3.

I think you could say that our tastes aren't in the same ballpark, but that they're in NEIGHBORING ballparks. I actually had Foxtrot on my chart for a while and if I had heard it first it would probably be in the #3 spot, but Lamb has such emotional significance to me that I can't bear to see it leave. And yeah, f# is a masterpiece, top 5 albums of the '90s easily.
