Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

I guess criticizing the albummaster on being too status quo and forcibly varied (and no, that's not a contradiction) would be stating the obvious. I'll say this: picks like The Orb and Enya make up a lot (and sure, INXS gives the perfect amount of cringe that's needed in a chart). That's the stuff I like to see; stuff you don't expect. That's my two cents.

At least the person in charge of this whole shebang has pretty good music taste. I've always wondered who they are. Do they get paid for this? Are they the same person that owns the site, or are they an employee (or group of employees)?
I also wonder how much their music taste has been affected by their own site. Maybe some of these albums were recommended through this site. That would be kinda cool
