Indie Rock, Art Rock

It took me a long time to get into this album. I fell in love with "Jesus Etc." instantly, but otherwise I couldn't figure out the hype. Over time as I kept revisiting the album I figured out bits and pieces, finding something new to enjoy every time. That, to me, is the joy of discovering and listening to music, something that I never engaged in quite so actively before this album. No other album have I personally found as musically and emotionally rewarding upon listen after listen. I recognize that this probably isn't the album to do that for you, but I wanted to share that philosophy since I think and hope everyone can find an album to feel so strongly about.

Best moment: At the end of "War on War" where the cacophony dissipates into feedback and immediately transitions into the gentle strings of "Jesus Etc."

Blues Rock, Folk Rock, Singer/Songwriter

1965 people! The year before Revolver and two years before Velvet Underground! This album didn't just open doors for rock music, it kicked them off their hinges. Not even The Kinks and The Stones were putting out anything this raw. Dylan somehow concurrently sings total nonsense and coherent criticism with a swagger that feels perfectly suited to the loose, dirty jamming of his backing band. And its that bluesy, laid back jamming that really pushes this album over the top for me. Everyone knows and everyone loves Bob's brilliant songwriting and lyricism, and rightly so, but here it comes across with an inimitable coolness.

Best moment: The snare shot in "Like A Rolling Stone." You know what I'm talking about. From the very first moment of the album you know you're in for a ride.

Hard Rock

I was in denial about this album for the longest time. I love blues music, and so I called II my favorite of theirs. But I love Led Zeppelin too, and this is the album where Led Zeppelin stopped playing blues (or folk) music or and started playing Led Zeppelin music. Every song here is iconic and indispensable from their discography.

Jazz Rap, Conscious Hip Hop

Honestly I didn't listen to a lot of rap before TPAB, but it convinced me that the genre had a lot more to offer than I was giving it credit for. Not only did it raise the bar on instrumentals, but it gave me a whole new appreciation for aspects of the music going on behind the M.C. that transferred even to other artists. Of course, Kendrick's vocal performance is beyond compare here, and the fact that funk and jazz are two of my favorites really makes this album a winner for me.

Art Rock, Electronic

Kid A was one of the first albums I listened to where I really felt like I didn't understand what artists were doing since I had never heard anything like it before. For a long time I preferred OKC, IR, and even A Moon Shaped Pool. What makes it so incredible to me, though, is that after studying and finding love for its influences like Aphex Twin and Talking Heads I found it more enjoyable and even more creative than I did on first listen. The fact that Radiohead made such niche genres in the scheme of pop music like post-punk and IDM into an album that topped the charts is incomprehensible to me.

Dream Pop, Neo-Psychedelia

If you've never listened to Fishmans, you're gonna wanna get on that right away. If you've never smoked weed, go ahead and get started on that too. Then do both of them together for a life changing experience. The atmosphere on this album is incomparable, and the fact it was recorded live makes it even more impressive. The band's reggae background gives all of their songs a laid back feel, but even on the songs leaning more towards psychedelic rock and there isn't a bad groove to be found.

Best moment: The guitar solo on ひこうき (Hikouki) when it turns into a high energy jam over a single chord (Or the entirety of the modern-day psychedelic symphony Long Season, but that seems like a cop-out).

Trip Hop

I love Dummy because for its time it was a perfect synthesis of past, present and future. The drum breaks and turntablism of early 90s hip hop, the words coolly delivered in a way reminiscent of vocal jazz, futuristic electronic beats and reverb heavy guitar from 60s psychedelia fit seamlessly together.

Avant-Garde Jazz

This album changed my perception of what jazz could be. My pre-conceived notions of what made jazz exciting and creative had to be completely reevaluated.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 91.6/100, a mean average of 93.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 93.8/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.7.

Really great mix of genres and time periods, plus I love the notes you've written so far. That Russian album is the only one not on my radar, will have to give it a listen!
