Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by discojets1

Here are a few things about my chart before you need to know
- I've added in the description in each album which shows the genre of the album as well as the "key songs" on the album.
-My chart tends to move around a lot (even my top 10), because tastes are always changing
-I've also added something at the end to show how quickly I took a liking to the record.
INSTANT CLASSIC – Loved it on first listen
FLIP-FLOP – Hated it/thought it was boring on first listen, loved it after revisiting some time later
SLOW BURN – From mediocre to excellent over many listens

60's and 70's inspired psychedelic rock and pop that pays tribute to the music that came before it while sounding all its own and modern. Excellent melodies and memorable songs. Timeless.

My favorite Floyd album just for the song "Dogs" alone. A nice concept record themed around George Orwell's "Animal Farm" and a nice critique on corruption in business and the music industry. A nice counterpoint during the punk era and murky and grimy compared to the sterile atmosphere of "Wish You Were Here."

Genre: Progressive Rock, Art Rock

KEY TRACK(S): Dogs, Sheep

This album is frequently described as overrated due to its acclaim but I could not disagree more. It has impeccable flow and is a beautiful and thought provoking record. Not much I can say that hasn't already been said.

A sprawling psychedelic masterpiece. An album filled with rock anthems and lengthy blues and psych freak outs. Perhaps the greatest guitar album ever recorded. The best Hendrix release in my opinion. A monumental musical statement.

Relaxing, lush, warm, repetitive, and human. A beautiful 35 minute neo-psych composition with beautiful melodies and sonic experimentation. Another perfect zone-out album.

Arguably my favorite King Crimson line up. A dissonant and heavy prog LP that foreshadowed the rise of heavy metal. "One More Red Nightmare" is perhaps one of my all time favorite drum performances by the great Bill Bruford, and "Starless" and "Red" are some of the most badass pieces of music ever recorded.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 2% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 91.1/100, a mean average of 91.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 92.3/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 8.0.

Love your genre notes. So many sub categories. The 'Instant Classic', 'Flip Flop' 'Slow Burner' notes were an interesting touch as well.

International Feel is one of the best songs I've ever heard - haven't listened to the full album in years, might have to give it another spin!

Lots of really good stuff here. I tried Todd Rundgren's music one time and couldn't get into it, but after checking this chart I will try again and maybe do a flip-flop like you.

When I read "progressive and artier genres and styles" I prepared myself for a by-the-numbers prog affair but was pleasantly surprised to find a real gem of a great chart! Absolutely adore the inclusions of Long Season, This Heat and Reich, would be nice to see a hip hop album or two sneak in (and some notes maybe)? Keep it up!

How could I have not run onto your chart earlier I don't know. We have a similar taste and I love your top 20 (thumbs up for Animals and Crime of the Century in particular). However, I miss some key post-70's prog. Have you checked Wilson/Porcupine Tree stuff for example?
