I'm not a fan of the movie - it's just too twee for my liking and I generally have little time for Jean-Pierre Jeunet's fish-eye-lens style of film-making. And, for the sake of being rather blunt, the film doesn't really have much a storyline as far as I can tell. It's just a quirky girl doing quirky things, she meets a quirky boy, the end.
However, I absolutely adore the soundtrack. Plus there's a degree of personal experience related to this album, which I find interesting enough to share with all and sundry: I'd just learned to drive in roundabout 2001-02 and discovered fairly early on that, if I'm perfectly honest, am not the most fair-tempered of drivers. I'm generally not the most fair-tempered of people. So much for honesty. However, I did discover that listening to this album calmed me down considerably, much to the point that someone cutting me off wouldn't result in a tirade of swearing and middle fingers from yours truly but just a calm... smile... and a slight but approving nodding to the tune of A Quai on the car stereo.
So, there is a good chance this album has helped me avoid being on the receiving end of a lawsuit more than once. Merci, Monsieur Tiersen. Merci beaucoup. [First added to this chart: 05/19/2017]

At the time this was a welcome breath of fresh air in the metal genre, with socially aware lyrical themes (prison reform, police brutality, US imperialism) that have unfortunately lost none of their relevance.

A good album that would (and probably should) rank higher than this were it not for the fact that the British music press hyped this album SO relentlessly upon its release, basically hailing it as one of the greatest albums of all-time and the utlimate saviour of rock music in general, when all I heard was an album that is, yes, good but not exactly "Electric Ladyland", that it actually put me off "Is This It" for a long time. All things considered, it's a great debut album - I just wonder how I would feel about it if the likes of the NME had spared me their hyperventilating, hyperbolic bullshit.

One of the few psytrance albums that seems to have something resembling universal appeal (further underlined by its presence in the year's overall top 100 on this site, which is actually an incredible feat for an album from this genre), but something that is entirely justified given the presence of classics like The Dorset Perception and Star-Spongled Banner. All together now: "I am a shaman, magician, the sun is purple..."
