Top 100 Music Albums of 1993
by desh79

Had I known that 1993 would be my last full year in Hamburg (before ensuing upon my 16-year-long stint in good old Blighty), I would have spent more time enjoying the sights and sounds of this wonderful city, instead of sitting in my bedroom wallowing in teenage self-pity whilst listening to hours upon hours of music, but at least I got a fairly decent Besteveralbums list out of it, didn't I. So, small mercies and all that.

At the time, the fact that this was obviously the work of a very troubled individual (QED, alas) completely passed me by, but notwithstanding, I still love this angry, magnificent monster of an album. [First added to this chart: 05/06/2017]

Now here's an album that isn't particularly loud or angry, at least on the surface - it's more a brooding Heathcliffe of a record, quietly sitting by the bar with red rimmed eyes while slowly sipping its third Old Fashioned of the evening and wondering where it all went wrong. Sometimes a forlorn sigh can be just as visceral as a scream. [First added to this chart: 05/06/2017]

Suede's debut is widely regarded as Britpop's zero hour (either that or Spike Island - it depends on who you ask), but it's debatable whether this album - and, in fact, the band - were actually helped by being lumped in with the "Go home yanks!"-crowd. Such was the sheer desperation of the British music press to have a homegrown musical movement to rival the grunge tsunami of 1992, coupled with a hefty dose of good old-fashioned jingoism, but Suede and their first album were so unbelievably bloody good that this kind of assistance probably wasn't required.

All the cultural baggage aside, this is a great debut album (for the record, So Young is one of my favourite album openers of all-time) and easily one of the musical highlights of the early 90s.

When we moved to England in March/April 1994, we basically lived in an empty house for a couple of days before our furniture was shipped over. All I had was a portable stereo and a couple of CDs, including this one. Thus Cherub Rock was the first song I ever heard in my new home in England, and it's probably for that reason that it remains my favourite Pumpkins song to this day (even though Tonight Tonight keeps giving it a really really close run for its money, as well it should).

That aside, what sets Siamese Dream apart from its alt-rock contemporaries is that it's technically so astute, I can still discover new things or still wonder what instruments I am actually listening to here (the first 15 seconds of Hummer - what is that? Seriously, what the fuck is that? What am I listening to?). Siamese Dream still gives me the same sense of wonder I had when I was 12 and listened to Sgt. Pepper for the very first time. A lot of hard work went into this album, but it's also a lot of FUN! to listen to - something that actually applies to most Pumpkins releases.

Luke Haines is a strange man. I shudder to think what going for a pint with him would be like. Chances are he would stare at me for two hours over his pint of Murphy's - not blinking once - before abruptly and suddenly leaving without having said a single word or taken a sip from his finest of Irish ales. And yet I would still feel like I have just been in the presence of a demi-God, solely on account of this wonderful album here. The lyrics to Bailed Out? Valet Parking? That marvellous scathing wit so glaringly obvious in every single song here? Oscar Wilde is a mere amateur in comparison. [First added to this chart: 05/06/2017]

Vs.
It's easy to forget what a huge deal this album was when it came out. Vs was the fastest-selling album EVER at the time, which I guess means that Pearl Jam were the Adele of their day. Seriously, if you'd told someone in, say, 1988 that five years in the future a quasi-punk genre called grunge would conquer the globe and an album that didn't have a single or a music video (and some highly politicised lyrics for good measure) would sell in the millions, you probably would've been sectioned. Nowhere near as good as Ten, but then not many albums are. Back in 1993 the only Christmas present I really wanted. [First added to this chart: 05/06/2017]

IDM's zero hour? Quite possibly hyperbole on my behalf, but sometime in the early 90s, the baton initially carried by the likes of Kraftwerk, Front 242 and Göttsching (not all at the same time, mind) was taken on almost exclusively by British electronic musicians like FSOL, Aphex Twin, and, lo and behold, the Hartnoll brothers. Ireland U2
I remember being really excited about this album in '93, but critics really seemed to hate it at the time. It was derided for all sorts of reasons, though chances are that it simply suffered from over-arching expectations following the massive success of Achtung Baby. In any case, the negative reception was probably what ensured that Zooropa would be U2's last foray into art rock, and their last genuine attempt at trying something innovative and zeitgeisty with the rock genre.
