And just like that 2018 is done and dusted
The top 3 albums for 2018 are as good a top 3 as I can recall for any year. Any one of these top 3 could have been my number 1 , but ultimately there was a clear standout winner and that was:
Mitski “Be The Cowboy”
TBH I pretty much knew this was the years best album from the very 1st time I heard it and is already a modern day classic. Having recently re-listened, it remains as superb today as when I first heard it and will certainly land on my All-Time Top 100 Albums at some point . Simply perfect from top to bottom
2. 1975 with a stunning commentary on the Millennial condition
3. Ghost: reaffirmed their standing as one of the most important bands in music today
Disappointing releases in 2018 from The Decemberists , Foil Deer and to some extent Mumford and Sons ( though the latter did land on my year end list be it low down)
In other music 2018 was all about 2 bands: The Replacements whom were my most listened act on SPOTIFY as their discography was comprehensively completed this year and Big Star similarly
Other highlights were a discovery of The Kinks in Village Green and Arthur (I'm looking forward to continuing this exploration in 2019 ) and deep deep deep dives on The White Album to celebrate its 50th Anniversary and R.E.M's Out Of Time
My top 5 tracks for year were:
(1) 1975: "Give Yourself a Try"
(2) Neko Case: "Curse of the I-5 Corridor"
(3) Mitski: "Geyser"
(4) Black Foxxes: "Breathe"
(5) Hop Along: "Not Abel"
