Top 100 Music Albums of 2018 by babyBlueSedan
Guess it's about time I make one of these. I've been pretty ambivalent about listening to music lately so I haven't listened to much from 2018, but I'll throw what I have heard here. If you want to know how this chart works check my other recent year charts because I'm too lazy to paste it here. Basically check out anything I rated 65 or above.
Now 45% less apathetic, with (mostly nonsensical) genres!

Fast trap
I was super impressed by J.I.D.'s rapping ability and his wordplay/rhyming. It was a lot to keep up with but all of his lyrics are very well-written. That said, the beats are a bit ho-hum and while he's a great rapper I'm not sure he's a very good songwriter. Despite hearing some good lines, there aren't any songs I could hum after two listens, and while I hate to bring up how much he sounds like Kendrick it gets a little distracting. It's like with Action Bronson and Ghostface where you know they can't really help it but I'd rather listen to the real thing instead of the Great Value version. [First added to this chart: 12/01/2018]
Sad guitar strumming
There are some good lyrics here, but it's hard to pay attention to them because these songs are not well-developed. Most of them don't go anywhere and just kind of repeat themselves over and over, which makes listening to this a bit of a chore. Even musically there's not a lot going on because most of the instrumentation is just guitar strumming.
I think I would compare this to my opinion of Julian Baker's music in that although it's not really bad per se, listening to it feels like it takes a lot of work. I want to pay attention to the lyrics but I care so little about the music that my mind wanders. [First added to this chart: 08/30/2018]
Kinda mathy twinkle emo
The first notes of this album are a giant misdirect. The first track starts off with some mathy arpeggios that makes you think this is going to be some math rock / emo hybrid a la TTNG. However, the rest of the track is pretty standard midewest emo on the pop punk side of thinks, with anthemic choruses and all. The songs occasionally break into mathy bits again but not with any substance. And because of that, these songs often get a little boring. [First added to this chart: 08/10/2018]
Middle-aged Koz rants
I feel like Mark Kozelek has me held hostage. No matter how middle of the road his releases continue being, I feel like I have to keep listening for fear of missing out on something truly exciting. Maybe that's a bit unfair, since I did really enjoy last year's Common as Light. But as much as I'm intrigued by his recent stream-of-consciousness-throw-everything-at-the-wall-and-see-what-sticks approach, it's made him create a lot of pretty terrible music. But even then the bright side of his albums always keep me coming back despite the bad. But not this time.
Let's start with the good: a lot of these songs have pretty good beats. I call them beats like they're hip hop songs for the simple fact that each song is basically built around a repeating guitar line. To be clear, these are not bops and do not have beats. Linda Blair has a really beautiful guitar, and the title track has a really calming backing track. In a lot of ways this is the Koz's most fun record in a while; I could name a lot of moments that are actually pretty funny. On Linda Blair, Mark starts doing the hiss from the exorcist to imitate someone's cough and then later brings it back while talking about Norwegian metal. He covers Come On Get Happy and Rock and Roll singer, and on the latter carries out some notes for literally 30 seconds before yelling "Wooo!!" On the opener he rhymes "falafel" with "awful" and "pepto bismol." You can try he's trying to have fun on this one.
But then there's the bad: despite this fun, it's not very interesting more than one. That Rock and Roll Singer cover is funny in a "what the hell am I listening to?" way, but on repeat listens you just want to skip those notes. Similarly, his rhymes and little reflections seem to matter less and less each time. And more than anything, so many of the things he talks about sound so mundane. He talks about getting extra pillows in his hotel, and staying at the Courtyard by Marriott like it's some luxury hotel. The opener is literally about him showing up to where he's supposed to perform, not being able to find the promoter, giving up, going to the hotel, getting in before check-in time, taking a nap, and then begging the hotel to make him dinner even though their kitchen already closed. And look, I'm not saying all of his, or anyone's, songs have to have some deep meaning. There can be beauty, or at least relatability, in simplicity. But these songs don't have themes that could matter to anyone but him.
If none of this has turned you off of the record, just know that he also brags about all the threesomes he's had and describes a girl jerking him off while sucking on his thumb. And yes, I know that I still gave this a 60, but I have brain damage and will forgive most if not all terrible choices on a Sun Kil Moon album after hearing those plucked guitar lines. [First added to this chart: 11/19/2018]
Synth pop
I really like the first song here but the rest is a little more typical and not very interesting. This rating isn't because they're no longer making jams like Time To Pretend, it's because this is pretty normal synth pop. I promise. [First added to this chart: 04/05/2018]
And the Wyoming albums are finally over. After starting with a bang, they mostly just limped along after that. I like the Rose in Harlem song on this one but nothing else really jumps out of me. And I can't stand the closing track, mostly because of how much it just doesn't fit here. [First added to this chart: 08/18/2018]
Energetic stoner rap
Another short album that feels hastily made. I think for this collaboration to work there would have to be more interplay between the rappers because as is it feels insubstantial. The rapping is great but it doesn't amount to anything I'd want to go back to. [First added to this chart: 11/19/2018]
Grunge doom
If you haven't heard Windhand's 2013 album Soma, do yourself a favor and listen to it. It's hypnotic, heavy doom with ethereal female vocals and is one of my favorite doom records. On this album Windhand decided they wanted to be Alice in Chains. Which is fine, but it's not what I liked about Soma. Also the vocals are much further forward in the mix so they don't get that spooky, drowned-out sound I liked from Soma. [First added to this chart: 10/29/2018]
Experimental post-industrial new wave soul experimental ambient pop
This has some pretty OK soul-influenced soundscapes, but the only moment I really loved was the last 10 seconds of the album. I'm not listening to the whole thing again just to hear that part. [First added to this chart: 10/19/2018]
Pop rap
First off: this is better than ye. Which is not at all a critique of the album but it is my opinion. I say it's better because there are two songs here that I would like to hear again, as opposed to 0 on ye. The opener is fantastic, with a frantic, military beat and some vocalizing from Kanye. Pusha T has a great verse, and Cudi is reduced to a one line hook. Kids See Ghosts is also pretty good; the beat is a little monotonous but Kanye has a fantastic verse.
Second off: this still suffers from some of the same problems as ye. The biggest one is that the songs are a bit undercooked, so even when there's a cool sound or beat it doesn't always translate into a well-developed song. Verses and choruses blend together, which is of course sometimes indicative of an experimental or freeform style of songwriting, but here it just sounds messy. And other than the Pusha and Kanye verses I mentioned earlier, there are really no standout moments vocally. It sounds like a beat tape that someone but someone released posthumously and put some previously recorded ad libs over.
Overall it's nothing something I'd hate to hear again, and I can see it appealing to some people. But after the opener the energy drops so much and it never recovers.
Also everyone says this is the best album cover of the year but to me it looks like a parody of a terrible anime. Pls let me know in the comments why this album cover is good. [First added to this chart: 06/09/2018]
