Nick Drake is probably one of the more misunderstood artists out there. His work is often labeled for being overly depressing with Pink Moon being his last gasp for musical recognition. However, I never understood that claim, even the people he worked with and lived with kinda think that's over romanticized despite his mental struggles. His work is a fine mixture of melancholy and optimism and being socially observant. (Especially in Bryter Layter)
Despite liking "Bryter Layer" more musically I like "Pink Moon" more for its overall connection with me. I don't hear him recording in a studio I hear him playing in his room late at night after getting that guitar tuning juuuuust right. Its my favorite album to listen to while I'm gardening. I think there's a nature connection ( Especially in "From The Morning") in here too but I don't have the words yet. Darn. I think Nick struggled with an artist's mind. Artist's often think so far from the box that most people could never understand. Not because of spite or anything...its just so foreign to them. I think Nick saw something different in life and sometimes I get glimpses of what he saw and felt while I garden. I pause everything I'm doing. I don't move. And then its gone, I can never remember these moments but they feel unique and personal to me, even if I did remember those moments the feel intimate and I'd probably keep it to myself anyways.
In songs like "Free Ride" and "Road" he seemed almost at disgust with someone and I've always been interested by who this faceless person is or was in his life. Just thought it was worth something to note.
He saw optimism in his darkest hours and I feel a lot of that was in nature. The wind blowing. The branches swaying. The waves crashing. The rocks being smoothed. The smell of the grain and the blossoms opening. Kinda like Van Gogh saw it. I don't know if it's me as a person or the tome In fruit fields but my favorite kind of beauty is In simplicity I tell ya. In the middle of a chaotic, twisted and gluttonous world there's still beauty to be found. Once a Junebug flew onto my shoulder and I let it sit there for an hour. It was calming to me that something so tiny saw comfort on my shoulder. I was about to get in the car and I helped it fly away into the coastal breeze where I was that day. People think something major needs to happen to make your day but the best moments wait in the quiet and humble moments you may be overlooking. Give it a good look and you may see the beauty in it.

Cool indie/twee focused list. If you can scrape up the money, you should try to go to the Boatie Weekender this year. B&S, Alvvays, and Yo La Tengo are playing, it will be a show of a lifetime.

Jesus this is fucking beautiful, the C&L note made me cover myself with emotional clouds, and the bon iver one just buried the sentence that this is a lovely chart, and since I'm a noteaholic it would be against my golden law to not give this the perfect score, simply lovely <3
