I went to go see Tinsley Ellis one night with my dad. He grevv up listening to his blues (he's already a music guru emotionally, it practically raised him) and I hear him all the the time at my office since he plays his music juuuuuust loud enough to vvhere I can hear vvhat he's listening to. Everything from Megadeth to Limp Bizkit to Tove Lo.....the man has...interesting tastes to say the least...anyvvays we went to go see Tinsley Ellis. He decided to hit up a coffee shop before hitting up a blues festival vvhere vve live. It was just him and his band playing their heart and soul for two hours....for 30 people...think about that. This man who's played with BB King's band and even Allman Brothers and was going to play for hundreds of thousands of people in the next fevv days...decided to hit up a coffee shop just to be with people and play. He was a sight to behold and I even got to meet him. I regret not talking to him more, I had my copy of Joni Mitchell's 'Blue' in my hand that I just bought and that vvould have been a good conversation piece. I got to thinking that night...

"I don't want to see artists live that are just there...I want to see more live but I vvant to feel like its people playing for people like tonight and not band for people." (I can't remember exactly what I thought, oof.)
The very same night I noticed that Alvvays had added to their Instagram stories...they added more dates and California had a fevv. Santa Cruz, Coachella and San Luis Obispo. I was already in love with the band prior but something about it was urging me to go...I think I knovv vvhat it was...hehe...anyways. This was the night before pay week so I transferred some money and bought tickets. I thought about seeing them in SLO since I was born there but CalPoly Kids are kind of the vvorst so Santa Cruz it was! $50.

*Two vveeks and two crummy Tuesdays later*

Me and my dad went on our way to The Catylist. VVe got their early, had some pizza, I bought some CD's. Good already! Frankie Rose and The Drums opened and that vvas phenomenal but now I was concerned.

"Are Alvvays going to pail in comparison?"
"Are they gonna be kinda stuck up?"

I had just spent $40 at their stand (T-shirt, Cassette, Demo 7') and it hit me...that same voice...urge...whatever you wanna call it...hit me. Frankie Rose had to get up close to grab her amplifiers....holy crap...can I get an autograph? VVhen it hit me the Drums vvere in the middle of their show. Me and my dad were separated and he had my stuff but I had a sharpie in my pocket! I vvaited for just the right moment annnd- GO! It was a standing show and I could have lost my spot easily. I bought this on vinyl for $20 and took off the shrink vvrap and put in my pocket. Sure enough...there was Kerri up close setting up her gear. I got her attention and she made a smile and mouthed : "One moment!"
She never got to me but the people vvere hell bent on getting them to sign my record! They shovved up and just started jamming "Hey" and immediately aftervvards Molly say:
"Hovvs everyone doing?
*Cheers*
"LONG LIVE THE BANANA SLUG!"
*Screams*
"so jealous...OKAY, PLIMSOLL PUNKS!"

I knevv right there that this was going to be like people playing for people. Just as I hoped and prayed for! They played about 85% of their songs and faked leaving 3 times but never got close enough to sign...but my dad met Fred Durst in his prime and damn it I wasn't giving up!!! He showed me vvhere I could find artists in general after a show.

I vvaited out for an hour...it was about 38 degrees.
I met someone who was also wanting a signature. He hadn't even listen to this record but wanted a signiture and I was cracking up inside! Like...vvhat?! After some chatting he realized he had let 3/5 of the members walk right by us...vve vvere bummed so that left Molly and Kerri. They vvalk out and he vvasted no time.
"No! THEY'RE SUPER AVVKVVARD AND SHY!" I vvas screaming in my head.
I vvalk up slovvly and Molly looks at me with a smile...

"Hi!"
"Oh...hi! How are you tonight?"
*Looks up then back at me* "Pretty good!"
"Thats good!....oh! Um...can y-"
"Oh! Sure thing!"
I handed it to them, the guy was chatting with them (notably Kerri) on how he was seeing them in Nevv York. I handed it backvvards on accident.
"I thinks thats backwards...unless you want it like that?" Kerri said avvkvvardly.
"Oh, sorry about that." I chuckled. The guy left, he seemed dissapointed. Kerri passed my record to Molly and left.
"So I hear you guys are going to San Luis Obispo!"
"Oh...yeah..."
"Have you been there before?"
"Nope! Its our first time..."
"You might wanna check out Woodstocks Pizza and Slo Do Co. While you're there, good stuff there."
"Good to know, thanks!" She says as she hands me my record.
"Thank you so much and have a great night!"
"You too!" She replies as she vvalks avvay. I start to walk away.
"OH! Safe travels!"
"Thank you!"

I walk back to the guy and he vvas disappointed because he wanted to ask them all these questions he had and I understood him, I had questions too but then again...the brief period of time I did have was unforgettable! I did my best to cheer him up, I shook his hand and me and my dad vvere off on a 4 hour drive back home.

A fevv days later the band played Coachella after that bar shovv.

I got a frame for my signed record on record store day.

Eight days after the shovv I turned 18.

The stars aligned for easily the greatest shovv I've ever seen. Everything felt so special and coincidental. Everything I had hoped and then some!Listening to the record will be tough without a turntable but boy is it sure pretty to look at!

Theres a reason vvhy I said "people for people". Even though they're one of my absolute favorite bands...they're still people. I wanted to show that to them in a nice way and I hope they sincerely got that. (Thanks Almost Famous!) I dunno. I'm overthinking an avvesome moment. Best $50 ever....

Cool indie/twee focused list. If you can scrape up the money, you should try to go to the Boatie Weekender this year. B&S, Alvvays, and Yo La Tengo are playing, it will be a show of a lifetime.

Adding number 2 in too, the Pink Moon description is undeniably poetic!

Jesus this is fucking beautiful, the C&L note made me cover myself with emotional clouds, and the bon iver one just buried the sentence that this is a lovely chart, and since I'm a noteaholic it would be against my golden law to not give this the perfect score, simply lovely <3
