Top 42 Music Albums of 2003
by mrmcrook

Not an overly spectacular year. Top dozen or so are great. Mostly a year of also-ran mediocrity. Compilations, Greatest hits, Soundtracks etc ranked after studio albums. Only fair in a year list.

84.28 When they were in their glory days and had hit their stride. 'Origin of Symmetry' was good but this is another level. Bombastic, grandeur, grandiose. An absolute joy. 03/24 [First added to this chart: 10/30/2020]

82.91 Hands down the best of all Placebo albums. The most consistent with the highest number of top quality songs with only a couple of tracks that fall into the filler category. Great rhythms, melodies and riffs. Surprising it's not rated higher within their cannon. 05/23 [First added to this chart: 10/30/2020]

82.50 Great sound for a two piece. Quite rightly heralded as their best album even though it was commercially pushed. It's the wide musical variety throughout this that makes this stand apart from their other albums. My favorite from them. [First added to this chart: 10/30/2020]

A hard album to put into words. Beautiful ?? Atmospheric ?? Hypnotic ?? The sense of underlying darkness ??
Whatever it may be this is a brilliant album. Just keeps growing on me and gets better every time. Prog rock on a heavier scale.

This is the 4th Elbow album I've purchased and it has not let me down. Not as outstanding as some of the others as a few tracks on this can fall under the filler category. But still a very worthy album with the majority of songs up there with some of there best [First added to this chart: 11/04/2021]

An alternative mix to Let it Be initiated by Paul McCartney as he thought the original mixing wasn't actually that good. The original never really struck a chord with me so I can understand what he meant after hearing this. It's way better. Way way better. Better mixing and better production makes a shit load of difference. I always thought the original fell flat within the Beatles catalog. With this it stands up there with equal footing to most others albums they put out. 02/25 [First added to this chart: 02/12/2025]

79.61 A band that doesn't take themselves lyrically serious. But man, they can fucking rock. The two main tracks that seem to be the only songs people know from them (Danger, High Voltage & Gay Bar) really are fantastic songs. But the whole album is solid. Love the slight heavy funk edge they have as well. Quite an uplifting album 11/24 [First added to this chart: 09/14/2024]

79.54 Fine album. Very dystopian overtones yet with some beautiful pieces throughout. Slightly reminds me of Pink Floyds 'The Wall' without being plagiarized. Totally their own. Unkle are a band that are very unique in style and sound. I find them hard to define. A class unto themselves. [First added to this chart: 03/12/2022]

79.54 Sort of sounds like a sequel to 'Is This It'. There's plenty of top notch tracks but unlike its predecessor it's not as consistent. But that was always going to be a hard ask. Still a great album though. 03/23 [First added to this chart: 10/30/2020]

79.11 With the added orchestra it has touches of symphonic metal but still being heavy as fuck. It's one that does grow on you and gets better with each listen. Couple of minor filler tracks but mostly an album of decent extreme metal 06/24 [First added to this chart: 12/14/2023]
